2000’s Fashion Trends That Are Back Courtesy of the Twenty Year Cycle

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Williams chapter.

If you’re like me, the 2000’s bring back painful memories of dresses over jeans, Juicy Couture everything, and the whale tail (the oh so subtle thong peeking out of painfully tight low rise denim). Whether or not you’re ready for a 2000’s comeback – it’s here. Thanks to the twenty year cycle, a theory that states fashion trends come back every twenty years, the 2000s are back stronger than ever. Here are some trends that I am grateful are back and some I’m dreading:

  1. Big Pants – Grateful

I love skinny jeans as much as the next girl, but I’m more than ready to trade in my skin tight jeans for a pair of baggy ones. Sometimes it’s nice not to have to struggle to put on pants. I’ve seen big pants of all types (denim, cargo, corduroy, etc.) being paired with both little and big tops. Both a cute little baby tee or a baggy band shirt combined with a nice big pair of pants fit the 2000s silhouette.

  1. Shoulder Bags – Dreading

Shoulder bags have been appearing on my Pinterest and TikTok recently. While the idea is cute, I personally find shoulder bags annoying. As a college student, I either streamline what I carry with me to what can fit in my pockets or I go big with my huge backpack. Although the in-betweeners might like this trend, I find them unnecessary.

  1. Cardigans – Grateful

This is perhaps one of the trends I’m most excited about! All types of cardigans are welcome and encouraged – whether tight cropped cardigans or argan or a classic grandpa style argan print. Since most cardigans are made from a soft knit fabric, their coziness is unbeatable. It also allows for more unique and vintage patterns. Don’t be afraid to experiment with cardigans. I highly recommend thrifting and seeing what you can find (thrift stores are usually filled to the brim with amazing quality cardigans).

  1. Low Rise Jeans – Dreading

The popularity of high waisted jeans was a cultural reset. I love how high waisted jeans cinch in the waist and elongate the legs, and I’m not ready to give that up. Low rise jeans, on the other hand, cut awkwardly at the hips and offer little lower torso coverage. I don’t know about you, but I remember bending forward and feeling a breeze go up my back. Not a great feeling, especially with the colder weather approaching. In general, one of my least favorite trends.

  1. Track Suits – Grateful

While athleisure is no new trend, track suits are especially reminiscent of the 2000s (courtesy of Juicy Couture and Paris Hilton). As someone who values her comfort, I gladly welcome the renewing popularity of track suits. Any excuse to wear what are essentially sweatpants out in public – and be considered trendy at that!

What I love most about fashion in 2020 is the sheer number of different aesthetics. Whether or not you choose to rock these 2000’s trends, there is a place in fashion for you. Cottagecore, E-girl/boy, dark academia, Y2K – there is an endless array of options. So feel free to incorporate your favorite 2000s trends into your own style – or not – and feel confident in knowing that in twenty years, you’ll be just as trendy again.
