Your makeup bag (or counter for that matter), may be hosting a lot more than just your favourite lipsticks, go-to mascara, or an array of eye shadow palettes. Old makeup can become home to a number of different bacteria and germs, which can affect your complexion, skin tone, and cause other not-so-pleasant side effects. While many of us are guilty of hoarding old and/or expired beauty products (myself included), it may be time to sort through your bag and toss out anything you can’t recall purchasing. For example, a glitter eye shadow that looked perfect with the dress you wore to formal in grade 10 can probably go in the garbage; the same goes for the foundation that matched your tan 2 summers ago.

Expiry Dates

What a lot of people don’t know, or don’t notice, is that nearly all makeup and beauty products have an expiry date or symbol stating when you should toss each item out. These symbols, which are usually found on the back of your products, typically indicate the number of months the product is good for after opening. But, beware not all cosmetic companies are required to list an expiration date or symbol.

Watches For Changes in Products

It’s important to recognize  discolouration in your products, changes in consistency, smell, texture, or any other changes from when you started using the product. This rule applies to your brushes, beauty blenders, sponges, and other applicators. Brushes and sponges should be thoroughly cleaned once a week (but at least aim for once a month), but if you notice any major changes, it’s likely time to swap out your tools and upgrade. While we’re on the topic, did you know that your loofah should be replaced every 3 months?? That filthy thing you’ve had since freshman year is likely filled with stuff that I don’t even want to mention. And I mean, come on, you can buy a new one for a few dollars.

Be Aware of Natural Ingredients

If you’re a fan of organic or more natural products you should really be aware of expiry and best before dates, as natural ingredients typically have a shorter life span. If you buy products at specialty stores, or purchase homemade or other naturally made products, consult a cosmetician or specialist regarding your products.

Do Your Products Contain Sunscreen?

Concealers, lotions, moisturizer, BB creams, CC creams, and foundations that contain sunscreen are a great way to protect your skin from harmful UV rays but can often expire faster than an alternative product. Although the product may still be useable to your standards, if the product is expired make sure to use an additional sunscreen to protect your face.

Whether you’re guilty of stashing old makeup or you’re just lying, it may be time to look a little closer at your favourite products and send a few to the trash bin. But hey, I’ll take an excuse for new makeup any day!

Wilfrid Laurier

You will typically see me with a large cup of tea and browsing social media under the fairy lights and reading up on my favourite lady bosses (Mindy Kaling let me be you please). Also my trivia regarding superheroes is endless. I have more music than time to listen to and someone definitely should consider taking away my blogging privileges. My love for pop culture is limitless and Netflix is the true MVP in my opinion. Contributor writer for HerCampus Laurier Stalk me and let's be friends here: Insta & Twitter: webofem
