Trigger warning: Despite the reasons listed below and the overall hype around this show, it is quite clear that it is intended for mature audiences. Euphoria contains graphic scenes of substance abuse, physical abuse, sex and more. Please only watch if you feel comfortable.

As I’m sure you’ve heard, HBO has just begun the release of the second season of Euphoria. This show took the world by storm back in 2019 when season one came out and, to date, has lived up to its preceding with season two. The inclusion, diversity and awareness around sensitive, glorified topics in this series allow young adults to relate to and fall in love with characters. Here are a few reasons you should watch Euphoria if you haven’t yet.

LGBTQ+ Awareness

Euphoria includes a diverse and inclusive cast like no other. Many of the main characters are part of the LGBTQ+ community, as well as the inclusion of Hunter Schafer, who plays Jules, who is a transgender woman. Far too often we see cis-gendered individuals playing transgender characters in movies or TV, however, Schafer, a transgender woman herself, truly plays who she is in this series and this inclusion was appreciated by so many across the globe.

Addiction & Substance Abuse Awareness

One of the main themes in Euphoria is the on-again, off-again of Rue’s (Zendaya) sobriety. However, Rue isn’t the only one with prominent substance abuse. Nearly all the main characters are seen using drugs, abusing alcohol or selling drugs at least once in Euphoria. Unlike many others, this show doesn’t glorify the aftermath of intensive drug use, rather, it depicts the scare and consequences of overdosing, especially in season one.

Cinematography & Makeup

The cinematography in this show is unlike anything we’ve seen recently. The way this show is filmed makes it feel so real, despite the fact that nobody’s high school experience was really like this. The filming and editing style this show portrays is so attractive in its dark colours with pops of light, almost the same way disposable film cameras capture pictures. The pink and purple light hues are so distinct to this show and make an appearance in nearly every episode. This ties into how fantastic and euphoric the makeup is across the female characters. In particular, the glitter, eyeliner and bold colours represented in the women’s makeup are always so exciting to see in each episode.

Abusive Relationship Awareness

Another topic that was brought to light in this series was abusive relationships. In particular, Maddy and Nate’s relationship. Without spoiling anything, this relationship is clearly quite toxic for both Maddy’s mental and physical well-being. However, Euphoria displays hardships that victims face in abusive relationships such as denial, forgiveness and legal consequences.

Acting & Cast

Last, but certainly not least, this cast is chef’s kiss. From Zendaya to Jacob Elordi and Angus Cloud, it’s quite an easy group on the eyes. Despite their looks, the acting in this show is some of the best I’ve seen recently. It also features other popular individuals such as Eric Dane and Sydney Sweeney.

If this doesn’t convince you, I’m not quite sure what will. Euphoria is easily one of the best shows I’ve watched recently and totally worth a binge if you’re up for it. A reminder that this series contains sensitive topics for many, please take care of yourself.
