Launched in 2017 to an international audience, TikTok has become a social media giant within a couple of years and is hailed as the long-awaited reincarnation of Vine. Although it started off as a market leader targeting preteens and teenagers, it has since reached older audiences and is now popular with all age groups. As much as I hate to admit it, I find myself frequently scrolling through the app in my free time for creative content and entertaining videos. Unfortunately, despite the interesting and funny videos on the app, you’ll still find particularly cringey and irritating videos that make you question why you use the app in the first place.

E-boys and E-girls

If none of these words ring a bell to you, the E-boy or E-girl look is basically a niche aesthetic of alternative fashion made up of skater, 90s fashion, anime and goth styles. While I don’t have a problem with the way that they dress, I thoroughly dislike coming across their videos on my feed because of their unoriginal and objectively cringey video ideas. E-boys and girls are notorious for sticking out their tongues, eye-rolls and doing poses that are so obnoxious it seems like they’re trying too hard. Since most of the time their content is boring and overdone, I’d really like to see this trend die out some point this year.

Viral Dances

Viral dances are fun to watch when they first come out but at this point certain trends have gone overboard. They become irritating to watch when your feed is filled with the same interpretation of the “Renegade,” “Say So” and “The Box” dance. I’m sure I’m not in the minority here by expressing my dislike for all the cringey and overly sexual dances on the app. There’s really no winning here because as soon as a dance trend dies, a new one takes its place so it’s highly unlikely that this trend will slow down anytime soon.

Cringey Couples

Since Tumblr’s popularity has been on a steady decline, cringey couples have moved to TikTok to display gross levels of PDA and rant about their relationships issues that no one cares about. Aside from this, they’re constantly doing cringey dance videos and skits that are neither cute nor funny. Of course, not all the couples on the app are embarrassing or awkward; it’s just the super cringey ones that ruin the fun for all.

Hype House

An influencer collective that is seemingly dominating TikTok, the Hype House has over 11 million followers and boasts some of the most popular influencer acts on the app. The problem is that it’s getting real tiring seeing Charli Demillio, Addison Rae and Lil Huddy on this app doing the same unoriginal dances moves to just about every popular song on the app. Look through any of their feeds and you’ll see an excess of dancing and posing videos that are not creative or entertaining but still gather millions of likes.

Despite my hatred of some of the most popular TikTok trends, the funny memes and videos make up for the cringey and predictable content on the app. I can only hope that some of these trends die out in the next year and stop showing up on my feed.
