The Best Underrated Halloween Costumes For This Year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wilfrid Laurier chapter.

We’ve reached that age where almost everyone we know has stopped trick-or-treating. Even the younger brothers and sisters no longer go out anymore. But that’s not entirely what Halloween is about, right? Now it’s all about the costumes. Couples’ costumes, solo costumes and group costumes. However, every year there are always some you see way too many of and you think they could’ve tried harder to be a little more original, so here are a few that I think will be underrated costumes for Halloween this year!

Cupid

There is no way to see a Cupid on the street on Halloween and not think, “Damn, why didn’t I think of that one?” First of all, it’s not gender-specific. You can throw a cut-up sheet over half of your body and get some red wings with a little heart bow and call it a day if you are more masculine. If you are feeling especially cute and feminine, you can get a red bralette with heart bow clips, a red or white skirt, some high socks and a heart bow. The only real problem with this one is the lack of clothing it comes with on a cold Halloween night, but once you’re inside, it will be more than fine (I hope). Either way, when someone wears a Cupid costume, you know what they are as soon as they walk into the party, and I’ve never personally seen it done yet!

The Matrix

This one’s a bit more minimalistic. Not sure if you want to commit to spending lots of money or looking straight out of a Halloween horror movie? This one’s for you. This could be a cute solo or duo costume. This one offers a little more warmth to the outfit, as Neo is usually wearing a long black trench coat and Trinity wears something awfully similar. The only thing that would really be a tell-tale sign that you are Neo or Trinity would be the black glasses they wear. However, if you are trying to spice it up and give it your own spin, you could wear the black trench coat and black glasses with a pair of black pants and a black crop top.

Jester

Feel like being a professional fool for the night? Then the jester costume is a perfect idea for you. Jesters were the type of people that made the room laugh or drew attention to the room to them. In more recent years this would be called a class clown, but it’s the same idea. This one is also not gender-specific so if you are a man, getting a black pair of pants and a red shirt or even a jester costume from Party City would do. As long as you get the hat with the bells, everyone should know who you are. But I’ve seen really cute ones for girls as well, with some eye makeup to complete the look, striped pants, a red top or even a skirt and long socks. This would work perfectly and you wouldn’t be twinning with anyone else at the party.

Kim Possible

Although I have seen a few of these ideas pop up on Pinterest, it’s still a classic idea and definitely affordable. I know I already have everything I need to be Kim in my closet, and I’m sure a lot of you do as well. And this one can even be turned into a last-minute duo costume; if you have a boyfriend with no costume ideas, he can be Ron. As long as he has some black cargo pants and a black turtleneck, he will pass in my books as Ron. And if he doesn’t have that, then he can be the naked mole rat instead, I guess, in a bind. Up to you.

If this article gave you some inspiration for this year, then I’m glad! Halloween doesn’t have to be stressful or expensive if you use what you already have in your closet. You can also go to a second-hand store to find some cheap alternatives. I hope I see some cute Cupids or jesters out for Halloween this year! Happy shopping, folks.
