Semester Recap Volume I: My First Semester as a Writer with Her Campus

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wilfrid Laurier chapter.

Recently, I have been reflecting on my time here as a writer at Her Campus, and I thought, why not make a series about my semesters! So that’s exactly what I will do; after each semester in Her Campus, I will be writing a recap of the semester and what I would like to do moving forward! Without further ado, welcome to volume one!

Let’s bring it back to the beginning when I first applied for Her Campus in Fall 2020. I was very worried that I would not get the position because I wanted it so badly! In fact, it took me days to fill out the application. I wrote a sample article titled, “How to Create your own Safe Space: Decorating your Dorm Room 101!”. This article was never published, however, I think it was very helpful. Perhaps I will publish it for Fall 2021. A few weeks later, after I had handed in the application, I received the news that I was given the writer position that I wanted so badly!

Let’s talk about highlights. Looking back on the fall semester, I was very busy trying to balance a new job and online school during the COVID-19 pandemic. On top of that, I was a part of an amazing and talented group of students and young women who were working together. I would say that being a part of Her Campus was one of the biggest highlights of my Fall 2020 at Wilfrid Laurier University. Another highlight, specifically Her Campus related, was the Virtual Fall Market where local small business owners had the chance to share their products with the Her Campus team. This event was really interesting for me, as I am very motivated by others who have the drive to be self-managed and independently successful.

Moving forward into Winter 2021, I am thrilled to be writing once again. In the fall, I did take some weeks off of writing articles for several different reasons including exam season, stress with my job and when experiencing writer’s block. This semester, I would like to ensure that I am consistently writing. I would like to complete my articles weeks in advance of exam season so that I can submit more articles to my online portfolio. My biggest goal moving forward would be to expand and strengthen my online writing portfolio. I plan to continue to put in my best efforts into my writing, and I am looking forward to finally meeting the team in person once it is safe again.

This concludes volume one of my Fall 2020 semester recap, and I am very excited to be writing again for this upcoming semester. Until volume two, I wish my Her Campus team and all readers a great start to 2021.
