New Year, New Me? A Foolproof Way to Stick with Your (Potentially Fading) New Year’s Resolutions

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wilfrid Laurier chapter.

Hello 2016; it’s me. Well ladies, we seem to be almost 2 months deep into 2016, and I’m going to take a wild guess here: our resolutions aren’t packing as much as a punch as we thought they would. We all rang in the New Year with possibly one too many glasses of champagne and swore to ourselves, starting January 2nd, we’d do better. So the question is how the heck do we stay true to our promise? Keep reading – I got you boo boo.

First and foremost, you’re not perfect and you never will be! So stop trying to be. It’s okay if you slip up and indulge in some pizza or sweets, or you don’t make it to the gym every day, and it’s okay if you miss a class here and there. The important thing is that you keep trying! So follow the steps below, and hopefully you will have a successful, happy, and healthy 2016.

Set goals! Don’t just talk about them; write them down. Go to Chapters and get some pretty paper, write your goals down, and have them in a visible place. The constant reminder will help!

Pro Tip: This is also very useful when it comes to remembering to do assignments!

Be realistic! Ladies, you all know how hard it is to get to the gym or sometimes even to class, so don’t set yourself up for failure (AKA saying you’ll gym everyday), no matter how motivated you feel. Take things slow and keep it fun!

– Sign up for exercise classes with a friend

– Get a skinny latte, but don’t you dare cut Starbucks out completely

– Have a side salad with your grilled cheese at Wilf’s

– Only allow yourself to skip one class a week

– Save your sleep-in days for the weekend

– Make library dates with your girls

– Cook healthy meals and share recipes with friends

– Choose water over everything else

It’s all about taking things slow and working up to those big goals!

Remind yourself! When you feel like you are falling off the wagon, take the time to remind yourself why you were motivated in the first place. This is another reason why it is important to write your goals down!

Reward yourself! Don’t be afraid to reward yourself for your hard work. Indulge in something, whether that is a new pair of shoes, a cheat day meal, or just a lazy Sunday spent in your pjs. Keep things fun!

So ladies, with that being said, I don’t think I can stress enough how important goal setting is. No matter what your goals are, it is important to recognize them and hold yourself accountable. You won’t just wake up overnight with the GPA you wanted, or body, or perfect sleep schedule. It’s going to take time and effort, so get out there and have fun, but don’t forget to stay motivated!

Brooklyn Ramsey, how do I even begin to explain Brooklyn Ramsey? She has two Fendi purses and silver Lexus. Her hair is insured for 10 thousand dollars, and I hear she does car commercials…in Japan. Her favourite movie is Varsity Blues and one time she met John Stamos on a plane and he told her she was pretty. Brooklyn aspires to be a cool mom and make sure Gretchen never lets "fetch" happen.

You will typically see me with a large cup of tea and browsing social media under the fairy lights and reading up on my favourite lady bosses (Mindy Kaling let me be you please).
