The Most Underrated Holiday Movies You Have to Watch This Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wilfrid Laurier chapter.

1. Shrek The Halls

Anyone who knows me knows that I am a huge sucker for anything Shrek related, and therefore it is not surprising that part of the Shrek franchise made it onto this list. People tend to overlook the Christmas special, despite that fact that it is the perfect way to get your Shrek fix while also being festive! It has all the Shrek characters you know and love, AND it’s jam packed with holiday spirit! It’s the perfect way to boost your mood and get you in the Christmas spirit at the same time.

Added bonus: It’s family appropriate! You can watch it with your entire family and all enjoy it equally.

2. The Nightmare Before Christmas

While many of us may have seen this movie, it often gets overlooked as a Christmas time classic and it’s better recognized as a Halloween movie. I say, however, that it can be both. The amazing claymation, classic Tim Burton style, and captivating yet comical storyline make it worthy of watching twice a year (at least).

3.  Bad Santa

This one is definitely more of an adult geared Christmas movie, so it’s probably better to enjoy it with some friends and some drinks, not with your younger siblings or your grandparents. Bad Santa brings a profane and comedic twist to the typical Christmas movie, and is a great way to mix things up by enjoying a Christmas movie that caters to a college age demographic, with all the sex, alcohol, and explicit content that is familiar to us in most other movie and television choices.

4. The Polar Express

I never really understood why this movie is so often overlooked during the holiday season, because it is honestly one of my all time favourites. It follows the story of a group of young children’s journey to the magical North Pole, and it will seriously have you wishing you were along for the ride. It is sweet and timelessly captivating, bringing back all the feelings of childhood nostalgia we look for around Christmas time. If you haven’t seen this movie or have been hesitant to give it a second chance, I would highly recommend it.

5. Krampus

If you’re a fan of horror, comedy, and Christmas movies, Krampus is definitely for you. While it’s marketed as a Christmas themed horror movie based on the European based legends of a mythical beast named Krampus, or the “Christmas devil”, I found it to be pretty ridiculous at some points. The movie brings its viewers a typical horror movie story line, but adds tons of ridiculous comedic relief for those of us who aren’t the biggest fans of being scared out of our wits by a Christmas movie. It is definitely a unique and memorable viewing experience, and a Christmas film that stands out among many.
