Homecoming is an exciting time of year for Laurier students, a time to show school spirit and celebrate with friends. One of the ways students show off their pride for Laurier is through purple and gold accessories and clothing! Style has changed over the years and what we wear on homecoming is much different than what our parents would’ve worn. Here’s what Laurier homecoming fashion has looked like throughout the years:
1980s:

Bandanas were a huge trend in the eighties, and this can most likely be attributed to stars such as Madonna who rocked this accessory on countless occasions. The oversized t-shirt was a staple in this time period, with many different variations of the look. Off the shoulder and graphic tees were super trendy, but so was the plain white look. We love the WLU and golden hawk face paint this woman has, school spirit is timeless!

The oversized knit sweater was a huge trend in the nineties, which was featured on shows such as “My So-Called Life”. Hair accessories were clearly influential, including the hair bows and paint in these images showcasing the Laurier spirit of these young women. Colourful windbreakers and rain jackets were an interesting trend that we’ve seen make a comeback in the past few years.
2000s:

We evolved from face paint to body paint in the 2000s, and clothing became optional. The sweater around the shoulder look was a popular trend in the eighties, but it looks as if it made a comeback in the early 2000s. The “2000’s sunglasses” were a trend that showcased smaller eyewear, and we’ve definitely noticed variations of this style over the past few years.

Tutus, flags, and knee-high socks are popular in our current era, most of which you can find in our very own bookstore. Face paint and makeup have been influenced by previous generations, and we still see these creative looks today! Flags and tapestries are a new way of showing off Laurier spirit, and a great home decoration. Necklaces, hats and nail polish are all ways to demonstrate school spirit, and we’re eager to see how students this year will show off their pride!
Trends come and go over the years, but Laurier students have always had the same enthusiastic spirit during the homecoming season. One thing is certain, Laurier’s purple and gold colours stay the same, and no school can top our school cheer!
