How the VS Fashion Show Ruins and Completes Us

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wilfrid Laurier chapter.

It’s that time of year again … The Victoria Secret Fashion Show!!! I know right, you can’t contain your level of excitement? Same. It’s the one night of the year where school basically doesn’t matter because you get to watch a bunch of gorgeous, fit girls walk down a runway in way too expensive lingerie, but whatever. It’s a guilty pleasure and I’m here to lay out all the things we love and hate about this special.

LOVE:

Snacks

Before the show even starts we all know that there is a need for almost every snack on the planet to be within arms reach. Who doesn’t love watching fit people on TV while eating 2000 calories?

The models interviews before the show

These are probably the best because you feel like you’re right there with them, as they get ready for the show. This is also the prime time to fangirl about all of your favourites, their excitement feeds your excitement and it’s just a fab time.

Performers

We are all impatiently waiting for the performers to be announced each year because musical guests are awesome. This year Harry Styles, Leslie Odom Jr., Miguel and Jane Zhang will join the models. Can’t wait to see what they bring!

WINGS

The wings literally get better and better every year. Seeing all the different creations and variations throughout the show is definitely a highlight. How those girls walk with those things on their backs and not fall over is true talent.

Fantasy Bra

First of all, you’ll probably love it or hate it. Sometimes you sit there like, “Umm really? You spent that kind of money on THAT?” or it’s a downright masterpiece. Then you also realize that the model is wearing enough money on her body to pay off your student debt, which also makes you kind of sad.

HATE:

Feeling bad about all the junk you’re eating

Let’s be real, about halfway through the show there is some regret about the fact that you are slumped on your couch eating whatever you can get your hands on and knowing that no level of exercise will ever make your body look like theirs.

Trying to convince yourself that you will look like that by the summer

We have all been there. You’re about halfway through the show and you realize that you haven’t hit the gym all year … or in years, like me. You then decide that your New Year’s resolution is to get fit and be your own VS model. Real talk though, most of us crack and continue to carry on our normal lives of eating chips and binge-watching Netflix.

Slight self-loathing that takes place before, during and after

We all have that moment where we wish we could be an angel. Then, we remember that most of us aren’t 6ft tall, super slim, toned and have that “model facial structure” that they are looking for. The VS Fashion Show kind of creates a false reality of what we believe we should look like, and the idea of perfection and beauty.

Knowing you will have to wait another whole year

It’s like you blink and it’s over. You get amped up for this one day each year only to realize, as soon as it’s over, that it won’t come again until 2018. Super sad.
