How to Have a Hot Girl Summer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wilfrid Laurier chapter.

As the end of the semester approaches, with it comes a ‘hot girl summer.’ This has been a normal occurrence in my life; my girlfriends discuss how they need to get their bikini body ready so that they can have and experience a hot girl summer.

If you don’t know what a hot girl summer is, it’s simple. Ever since Megan Thee Stallion and Nicki Minaj came out with the song ”Hot Girl Summer” in 2019, I’ve heard countless friends reference how they are ready to experience it. A hot girl summer is when you have the confidence to go out and be yourself. To clarify, this does not mean that it’s a summer spent hooking up with multiple people; both single and people in relationships can have a hot girl summer.

There’s a secret to having one though, and after endless summers of not being satisfied with my own bikini body, I am finally coming to terms with what this secret is. It was only a few days ago that I realized and told myself that I am over trying to get this ‘perfect bikini body.’ Having a hot girl summer does not require having to be sexy or having an hourglass figure. Through reflection on the girls that I have seen doing this, I compiled a list on how to make this summer the best hot girl summer ever.

1. Be Confident

I can’t stress this enough, and I know how hard this can be for some of us ladies because I struggle with this every day. You need to be confident. It may seem simple to say but I know how hard it is to feel and be confident. My first piece of advice is if you must fake it ‘till you make it, do it. Fake the confidence and, eventually, you will start believing in yourself. Go out and buy yourself something that you feel hot, confident, and sexy in; sometimes we just need a certain outfit to bring out hidden confidence.

2. Be Yourself

This is something that everyone should hear and know. Do not be someone you’re not because someone doesn’t approve of how you act or who you are as a person. You should never let someone shame you for being who you are, and chances are if someone isn’t approving of who you are then they probably aren’t a real friend. By being yourself, you’re going to feel so much more confident and comfortable in your own skin. Every person is unique in their own way and this is such an important quality to have!

3. Live Your Truth

This can be another way of saying that you shouldn’t let people dictate your decisions. If you want to wear that outfit or bathing suit because you feel confident and sexy, then don’t let anyone stop you. If you want to have a hot girl summer, you need to live by your values and your own truth. No one else controls these things except you. By living your truth, not only are you going to feel physically better, but it is going to be way less mentally exhausting on you.

Anyone can achieve this if they set their mind to it. I know it can be difficult doing all three of these things, but I don’t want to have another summer where I don’t wear an outfit or bikini because it isn’t that ideal picture of a ‘bikini body.’ I don’t want to pretend to be someone who I’m not around my friends or family. I want to start living through my truth and values. I know I have the potential to do all three of these things, and I know you can too. Let’s all have a hot girl summer where we’re confident, unapologetically ourselves, and living our truth.
