I’ve never been a morning person and I never thought I could be a morning person but let me explain how drinking coffee has changed my entire existence in terms of lifestyle, personality and, most importantly, my productivity. We all know that caffeine-hater. The one that says, “Oh lord! How does one drink that stuff” and “Yeah, couldn’t be me!” I have always found the taste of coffee to be completely unpleasant and unnaturally bitter, but I have begun to enjoy the warm aroma it provides and the boost of energy I feel after a cup.

My new perspective all started in Mexico. Maybe not as revolutionary or extravagant as one may be imagining, but instead of late-night drinking, I enjoyed devouring every decadent flavour of ice-cream at a nearby parlour. After a few nights, my tastebuds were abruptly awakened by the heavenly flavoured coffee goodness, and so coffee ice-cream became a crucial ending to every night. Though I can’t say I instantly loved the taste of a steaming hot mug of coffee, as it is an acquired taste, I slowly developed my love for the taste from drinking ice cappuccinos to iced coffees to finally the comforting, relaxing devil itself.

Drinking coffee has become a routine and a ritual. Especially with the chillier temperature in Canada, it warms me right to the soul and provides a jolt of energy to my mornings. It comes with great health benefits such as lowering the risk of various diseases and cancers. I am no scientist or doctor, but I can say that drinking coffee has significantly reduced my procrastination and stress levels, and it has helped in calming me down. In terms of lifestyle, it has helped in getting me up and moving, been a social connective, improved my sleep quality and has been a positive and encouraging habit.

As an energizer and fuel, coffee has enhanced my performance in my schoolwork and workouts. Since it has helped wake me up in the morning and start the day feeling ready, it has cut my procrastination time and has forced me to get straight to work. One can argue that I simply make a cup of coffee to avoid logging onto a Zoom lecture, but I really do believe that it kickstarts my day and gets me in the right frame of mind. I did mention that it has evolved my personality and what I mean is that it has helped me become more patient and receptive to others’ criticism, conscientious in my words and tone and proactive in achieving my goals.

Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoyed my short journey to becoming a coffee addict and the difference it has made in helping me become more productive.
