Find the Best Campus Group for You

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wilfrid Laurier chapter.

Congratulations collegiettes for surviving the first two weeks of the Fall semester! As if the first week wasn’t busy enough, classes are now in full swing, and you should expect nothing less from the on-campus clubs this week. Between the Get Involved Fair and Promo Week, it seems like there’s an infinite amount of clubs to sign up for this year, but how do you know which one is the best fit for you?

If you want to join Greek Life…

For Greek Life at Laurier, September is as exciting as Christmas. Recruitment events are going on all week, with sororities hosting individual events in the evenings from Monday, September 15th to Wednesday, September 17th. These are a great way to give collegiettes a glimpse of what life is like within each sorority and Greek Life as a whole. If you haven’t had the chance to stop by the Alpha Phi Fraternity or Alpha Omega Sorority booths yet, you can register for Recruitment on the Alpha Phi website and the Alpha Omega website. Event schedules are also posted on these websites, so make sure to check them out! If you have any questions or concerns about the Recruitment events or individual sororities, contact Alpha Phi’s Sydney Finnigan at wlualphaphi@gmail.com, or Alpha Omega’s Sang Nguyen at ao.rush.wlu@gmail.com.

If you like to be active and philanthropic…

Fashion ‘n’ Motion is a student-run, recreational dance charity organization that combines physical activity and philanthropic initiatives to raise money for a different charity every year. This year, they are supporting Right To Play, an organization that uses “sport and play to educate and empower children and youth to overcome the effects of poverty, conflict, and disease in disadvantaged communities”. The theme for the year is “Hero” so dance choreographers are each focusing on a comic book superhero to incorporate into their dances. For more information about Fashion ‘n’ Motion, check out their Facebook page here

If you’re interested in getting a head start in your career…

Laurier Marketing Association is a student-run organization dedicated to providing academic, professional, and social faces of marketing to undergraduates interested in the field. LMA teams up with world-renowned faculty and alumni, as well as industry leaders and recruiters from the world’s top companies to provide great networking opportunities for Laurier students and help them get a foot in the door in the marketing industry. LMA has many events planned for the year, its most recent being the Miles for Smiles 5K glow-in-the-dark charity run on evening of Saturday, September 20th to raise money for the Sick Kids Foundation. This is a great way to start getting involved in LMA and contribute towards a worthy cause. Visit the LMA Facebook page to stay updated with their upcoming events and check out the Smiles for Miles event page for more information.

If you’re an activist for animal rights…

Laurier’s Vegan and Vegetarian Association is a student-run organization that promotes animal rights, with the biggest beneficiary being the promotion of vegetarian and veganism. VAVA aims to show the benefits of living a meat-free lifestyle while raising awareness of the consequences from consuming animal products. Students can share their vegetarian and vegan recipes on the VAVA Facebook page and get updates on upcoming events.

If you love musical theatre…

If you saw the Legally Blonde musical last year, it would come as no surprise that the Laurier Musical Theatre received the Clubs and Associations award for Club of the Year in 2013-2014. This student-run organization puts on a show annually for the public. This year, LMT’s annual production will be The Who’s Tommy, a rock musical based off The Who’s 1969 rock opera album, Tommy. If you’re passionate about singing and dancing, keep an eye on their Facebook page and check out the LMT website for postings about how you can get involved this year.

These are by no means the only ways to get involved on campus! Laurier has countless clubs so finding the one for you is merely at the click of a button. For a full list of clubs on campus, check out the Clubs and Associations website and find the perfect one for you. Clubs are starting to get the ball rolling so don’t miss out on joining whatever interests you. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain, so start getting involved Golden Hawks, the year has just begun!
