Fashion Essentials You Need in Your Wardrobe this Winter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wilfrid Laurier chapter.

After last week’s unexpected snowfall, we can finally embrace the incoming winter season and prepare to dress accordingly; to protect against the cold and look great at the same time. Winter is definitely my favourite season for fashion as you can layer your thickest sweaters, coats and scarves, expanding the variety of outfit possibilities. With brutal forecasts this winter, we’ve provided some suggestions for you to diversify your wardrobe and outfit choices!

Puffer Jacket

It is absolutely necessary to own a warm winter jacket if you want to survive the cold and puffer jackets have been on trend for the past few years. There are several colours and styles to choose from, you can go casual with a neutral colour or try a pop colour for a statement piece. You can find puffer jackets at most women’s fashion stores; Aritzia carries a lot of colours and styles and Uniqlo offers the same variety but at a lower price point.

Cashmere Sweater

A perfect layering piece, cashmere sweaters are a quick solution for those days when you don’t know what to wear. They’re a luxury piece (prices range from $50 to a few hundred) but definitely worth the money since you can wear it with any outfit and not to mention they’re super warm! Keep an eye out for these sweaters when they go on sale!

Over-the-Knee Boots

These boots are a dressier option for winter footwear, but are very versatile as you can pair them with a casual outfit or for a going-out look. For a more casual look, wear these boots with jeans and a sweater. For a nighttime look, try wearing a dress or skirt with these boots.

Blanket Wrap Scarf

A big and warm scarf is an absolute must-have for snowy days. They’re a great addition for layering and are super easy to style as well. There are so many ways to tie them: you can drape the scarf over your coat, loop it around, etc. We recommend keeping a stash of these in your wardrobe for different outfits; neutral colours, bright colours and patterned scarves are some of the many styles of blanket scarves you can find.

Turtleneck Top

One of my favourites for the winter season, a turtleneck top looks good with any outfit and is an easy piece to just throw on when you have nothing to wear! Wear a turtleneck sweater and layer it with a coat or jacket for the coldest days or try a turtle neck shirt with a cardigan layered on top. You can style these tops with just about any piece of bottoms; they look great with a simple pair of jeans or trousers!

Dressing for winter can be difficult because you may think that you have to compromise style for warmth and convenience, but that’s just not the case because there are so many ways you can layer outfits to look stylish! We hope that you enjoy this list of winter essentials and try some of the pieces mentioned!
