Fall is finally here, and what activity screams fall more than apple picking? As you scroll through your Instagram feed, I’m sure you’ve see all your friends out picking armfuls of apples in picturesque orchards. But seriously, wtf are you going to do with all of them? I know a lot of people really enjoy pies, but, for someone like me, my go-to is caramel apples! Keep reading to find out a whole bunch of seriously easy options to amp up the standard caramel apples.
You will need (give or take):
- Milk Chocolate
- Caramel
- Wooden Dowels (or popsicle sticks)
- Apples (I used green because that’s what I prefer)
- Toppings (M&M’s, Skor bits, Oreo crumbs, etc.
Traditionally, the caramel used for caramel apples are those little individual squares we all got in our Halloween baskets. But rather than peeling all of those little squares and then having to melt them, I purchased a microwavable caramel kit that was super easy.
All I did was put in on a microwaveable dish and heated it in 30 second intervals, stirring between each interval, until it completely melted. In my microwave, it took about 1 minute and 10 seconds to fully melt, but your microwave may be different.
First is the most basic apple. Just a plain old simple green apple dipped in caramel.
Then we have the caramel apple dipped in chocolate!
The chocolate I used is made specifically to be melted. Make sure you get this type of chocolate wafer, as many types of chocolate do not melt well, including most chocolate chips. I picked up my chocolate wafers at Bulk Barn, and they come in different colours and types of chocolate if you’d rather try those. Rather than putting the chocolate in the microwave, I boiled about an inch of water in a pot and put the chocolate in a metal bowl on top of it so the steam melted the chocolate. Make sure that the bottom of your bowl doesn’t touch the water, or else you’ll burn the chocolate!
Finally, I tried to dip the chocolate dipped apple into white chocolate. However, the white chocolate didn’t melt as well as the milk or the way I wanted it to, so it ended up having a marble effect, which was cool, but not what I was hoping for.
All of these options can be dipped in whatever treats you want. My favourites are Skor bits and mini M&M’s. Great options could be crushed peanuts, almonds, pecans, or any type of crushed candy. The options are endless!
Because one of my roommates is allergic to apples (weird- I know), I used the leftover chocolate and made chocolate covered strawberries, which are also delicious and easy to bring along as a snack!
Well there you have it! If you’re going apple picking this fall, or even if you just buy some at a store, make sure to try some of these ideas. How do you like your candy apples, collegiettes?
