Campus Cutie: Jackey Ouellette

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wilfrid Laurier chapter.

Meet this week’s Campus Cutie, Jackey! Jackey is a fun-loving Golden Hawk with a smile and personality that brightens up any room she is in. She’s a veteran of the Her Campus team, Co- president of Kid’s Help Phone Laurier, takes recreational dance classes, and you may know her as the Mock Interviewer for the Co-op department! Get to know her below.Name: Jacqueline “Jackey” Marie Ouellette

Program: Communication Studies and Film Studies with the Co-op option

Year of Study: Fourth

Hometown: Brampton (a.k.a. B-TOOOWN)

Relationship Status: In a relationship with my High School crush.

Motto: Live for passion, action, and positive attraction.

Favourite song to jam to?

That’s a hard one. I like different music for different activities. I’ll give you a couple for a few typical activities:

Pregame – “Party Done” by Angela Hunte and Machel Montano, and “679” by Fetty Wap feat. Remy Boyz,

Chilling – “I” by Kendrick Lamar and “Unruly Prayer” by Popcaan

Waking up – “Day Tripper” by The Beatles

Favourite spot in Waterloo?

My bed. As nerdy as it seems, I also like being in classrooms (especially at the front) because I actually enjoy school. Phil’s Grandson’s on a Wednesday night is the only night scene that is worth my time in line. I also LOVE Honey Bake Shop!

Guilty pleasure?

I’m unashamed of my pleasures, as far as I know, but I have gotten some looks when I proclaim my love for anime.  I would also say that I am obsessed with Disney Princesses, if that counts.

What is your favourite series or show to binge watch on Netflix?

The 100. It’s amazing! Go watch it!

What is your fashion staple?

I almost never leave the house without lipstick on. Apparently, in first year people on my floor called me “Lipstick Girl” until they knew my name. I just find that if I’m in track pants, with disheveled hair, and no makeup, people often ask if I am sick, because I am so pale that I sometimes get a green-like undertone.  Lipstick is my bright and vibrant way of saying, “Please don’t comment on how I look. I’m fine.”

Most embarrassing moment?

I went bowling with coworkers, managers, and directors from D2L Corporation this summer, and ended up throwing the bowling ball backwards. No one got hurt, but multiple departments were talking about it the next day.

What have you been involved with during your time at Laurier?

I am currently the Co-President of Kids Help Phone Laurier and an Editor for Her Campus Wilfrid Laurier. I’ve been involved with Kids Help Phone Laurier since first year, starting as an honorary member, then becoming the Executive of Communications the following year, and for the past two years I have been a Co-President.  I got involved with Her Campus when it started up last year, and I’ve bounced around between being the Co-Editor, a promotional team member, a guest writer, and a general editor.  Some of you might also know me as a Mock Interviewer for the Co-op Department! That has been a lot of fun.  I’m also a dancer with the Laurier recreation classes, a general member on the Communications Students’ Association, and a film screener for some of my film courses.  In first year, I was part of the Communications Residence Learning Community as well.

What inspired you to get involved?

I used to be the captain of my high school dance team, and I met a few of my best friends this way. Going into university, I knew that I wanted to stay involved. I knew that I wanted to do something charitable, because I had discovered a sense of purpose in helping people. When my friend mentioned Kids Help Phone, I knew that it was the club for me, because I love kids and I was very interested in learning more about mental health.  In my high school careers class, I interviewed the Editor of the Brampton Guardian, because I have a strong interest in publication and telling stories.  I am also a feminist, so when I saw that Her Campus was a publication tailored to women’s demands, I knew that I wanted to be a part of it.  It just fit so well.

What does being a Golden Hawk mean to you?

Being a Golden Hawk is seizing our unique opportunity to be a part of a community interested in happily learning from one another, in a space that allows us to discover and explore so freely.

If you had the chance to live anywhere in the world for one year, where would you go?

Nepal. I have a few Nepalese friends that came here around the time that the Republic was taking control, and I have been lucky enough to learn a lot about the history, culture, and natural environment there.  I would want to take part in the efforts to help communities recover from the 2015 earthquake.

How would you describe yourself in three words?

Optimistic. Passionate. Contemplative.

What are you passionate about?

I am passionate about cultures, stories, communities and their capabilities.

I am passionate about being a conscious citizen of the planet, and about how children learn and enjoy the little things.

I am passionate about learning through film, people, courses, books, and the internet, as well as teaching by building meaningful relationships and forming opinions worth sharing.

I am passionate about contemplating solutions to the issues that I learn of, talking about my solutions so that I can find flaws, and rebuilding a stronger vision.  Last but not least, I am passionate about acting in a way that will make my vision a reality.

What would you like to be known for?

I would like to be known for my helpfulness. I want to be like someone’s fairy godmother; someone who they can be thankful for when they look back.  I have been lucky enough to meet a few people that have done this for me, and I look back at them so fondly.

She’s quite the gal and we hope you loved getting to know her! Good luck in the future Jackey.

Wilfrid Laurier

You will typically see me with a large cup of tea and browsing social media under the fairy lights and reading up on my favourite lady bosses (Mindy Kaling let me be you please). Also my trivia regarding superheroes is endless. I have more music than time to listen to and someone definitely should consider taking away my blogging privileges. My love for pop culture is limitless and Netflix is the true MVP in my opinion. Contributor writer for HerCampus Laurier Stalk me and let's be friends here: Insta & Twitter: webofem
