When you head over to the Fresh Food Company for a bite, you know that you can count on a great meal, and expect to receive excellent service. It takes a special type of person to maintain a positive attitude and bright smile, even when they are dealing with grumpy students during exams, midterms, or the Laurier Plague.

This week, I sat down with an enthusiastic, food service favorite. Cheryl Keller, a cashier at the Fresh Foods Company, is well known by many Golden Hawks as a friendly smile that you can always count on. We met to discuss what it’s like to work with Golden Hawks every day.

Job Title:

Cashier, Fresh Foods Company

Tell us a little about yourself.

I have three children who I am very proud of and two grandchildren who I adore. I love to go to the theatre and travel. I read a lot, and just enjoy spending time with family and friends

How long have you worked for WLU?

I have worked at WLU in food service since the year 2002.

What do you like most about being around Golden Hawks every day?

I like being around the Golden Hawks every day because of their energy and excitement! Every September, I enjoy meeting a new group of students.

What do you like least about being around Golden Hawks every day?

I can honestly say that there is nothing that I dislike about the Golden Hawks! The students are just awesome!

What is your favorite thing about Waterloo?

I grew up in Waterloo, so I have seen many changes. There is a theatre here, and the lovely Waterloo Park that holds many events in the summer months! There are also some lovely restaurants. We’re close to the famous St. Jacobs Farmers’ Market, and, of course, the many clubs that the students love. Also, we have two of the greatest universities here!

Where is your favorite place to eat on campus?

The Dining Hall is the best place to eat, with many options. We cater to special diets and allergies, which is very important nowadays!

What is your favorite dining hall meal?

My favorite meal would definitely have to be the roast beef dinner with mashed potatoes and gravy!

Describe a “typical” Golden Hawk.

My idea of a typical Golden Hawk would be someone who is involved in a sport or a club.  Of course, they are kind to their fellow students, and love to have fun! They also study hard and have great school spirit.

What is your favorite part of the job?

I love interacting with the students. I like having the opportunity to try to calm them down when they are stressed, giving them advice, or getting them to go to Health Services when they have a nasty cold. I just love the students!

What advice do you have for Golden Hawks?

First and foremost, you guys are here to get a good education, make new friends and have fun! This is the chance of a lifetime. You are lucky to have this great opportunity. Whenever you can, try to be friendly and reach out to your fellow students who may need a friend. If you see someone sitting and eating alone, smile, strike up a conversation or join them, because it could make their day!
