A Student’s Guide to Winter: Lorelai Gilmore Style

If you don’t love winter, taking a Lorelai Gilmore approach can help. She’s the kind of person who walks outside, smells the air and confidently says, I smell snow, like the cold is something to look forward to. Even if winter isn’t exactly your thing, borrowing a bit of that energy can make the season feel softer and a lot less heavy.

Winter can be quiet, dark, and honestly a bit tiring. But it also has small moments that feel peaceful when you actually notice them. You don’t need to transform into a winter person overnight. You just need a few simple routines that make the season feel easier.

Start With a Winter Outfit You Actually Like

Lorelai’s winter style in Gilmore Girls is fun without trying too hard. She rotates through colorful beanies, patterned scarves, and layered outfits that look warm but are still put together. Most of the time, she’s in a fitted coat with a scarf wrapped once around her neck, a bright hat and some simple gloves. It’s nothing dramatic, but it works because she keeps it practical and a little playful. You don’t need to recreate her wardrobe but having a couple of pieces you actually enjoy wearing makes cold mornings less awful. Once you have a simple “winter uniform,” even the walk to class starts to feel a bit easier.

Choose Your Comfort Drink, even if It’s Not Coffee

Lorelai is known for her coffee, but you don’t need to copy that. If you’re not a coffee person, hot chocolate absolutely counts as your winter ritual. Walking to the local convenience store to grab a warm drink becomes its own little moment. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy. It’s more about getting outside for a few minutes, warming your hands on the cup and letting it be a small highlight in your day.

Make Your Space Feel Like a Snow Day

One of the easiest ways to enjoy winter is by turning your room into a place you want to spend time in. A heated blanket, a soft movie playing in the background and maybe a little electric fireplace heater can make your room feel warm, even when everything outside is freezing. It’s simple, but creating a space that feels cozy makes winter nights less draining.

Study in a Way That Doesn’t Feel So Serious

A lot of people think studying has to happen in complete silence, but that isn’t the only way. Lorelai is always surrounded by noise, the diner, the town, her own chaotic schedule, yet she still manages. If you focus better with a bit of background noise, embrace that. Put on something familiar, put on a quiet playlist, or let the TV run in the background. Studying doesn’t have to feel intense to be productive.

Look for the Small Winter Moments

Lorelai pays attention to the things most people ignore. The air before it snows, the way the streets look at night, the feeling of being warm inside when the world outside is cold. When you start noticing things like that, winter becomes less about the temperature and more about the atmosphere.

You don’t have to become obsessed with winter. You just need a few moments that make it feel softer, like a warm drink, cozy room, or slower routine. If you take the season day by day and give yourself permission to enjoy the little things, winter starts to feel less like something to get through and more like something you can appreciate.

And who knows, one morning you might step outside, breathe in the air and think, almost without trying, I smell snow.
