October is officially among us. We can feel it in the aroma of cinnamon Starbucks, the cozy scarves, and the return of a darker colour palette in our wardrobe and makeup. Fall is without a doubt an exciting time for colour; we see it all around us as the leaves transition to shades of gold, orange, and red! So naturally, there is no better season to experiment with colour for our makeup and lipstick.

It’s inevitable to see the bold lip colours pop up around campus during the fall, but it can definitely be tricky to know exactly what colours to look for and the best product formulation. Follow this guide for the tips and tricks to your perfect fall lip shade listed from safest to the most daring!

1.  The Dark Nude

Think Kylie Jenner-esque. This trend has exploded in the past year and is a perfect everyday fall lip colour to swipe on and rush out the door. A deeper nude is a nice transition into fall while still staying on the safe side. Try using Faux by Mac or Touch of Spice from the Maybelline creamy matte collection.

Pro Tip: Pair on top of Whirl lip liner by Mac for a stunning dark nude lip, and to achieve the iconic lip combo used by Kylie Jenner herself!

2. The Mauve

Mauve is a perfect everyday colour to wear to class, yet is still subtle enough to be paired with heavier eye makeup. It borders on neutral while still giving your face a slight flush of colour and a healthy glow. Try Mehr by Mac or Lust for Blush from the Maybelline creamy matte collection to achieve this look.

Pro Tip: Mauve has a natural cool undertone, which will make your teeth appear whiter.

3. The Berry

Warm berry tones are the epitome of fall lip colours. They compliment the season perfectly and have become an iconic sweater weather shade. Berries give your face a flattering pop of colour, yet are not bold enough to be the main focus of your makeup. Try Revlon Lip Butter in Berry Smoothie or Mac Rebel.

Pro tip: Double your berry lip shade as a cheek tint! Simply dot the colour on your cheeks and blend for a berry flush to match your lips.

4. The Brick Red

The 90’s are making a comeback this fall season with the return of the burnt orange tinted lip. This rich shade has been spotted all over the Fall 2015 runways in both clothing and all forms of makeup. Try Nars semi matte lipstick in VIP Red or Revlon matte lipstick in In the Red.

Pro tip: Keep the eyes simple with subtle mascara and a sharp brow to pull it off exactly like the models on the runway.

5. The Classic Red

“And I got that Red Lip Classic thing that you likeeeee.” Of course, Taylor Swift always has her red lipstick on point. Experiment with a statement crimson lip this fall to channel traditional Hollywood glam. Try Siren in Scarlett from the Maybelline creamy matte collection or the Nars Velvet Matte lip pencil in Cruella.

Pro Tip: Be sure to use a red lip liner with this shade to ensure protection against smudges and colour that will last for hours.

6. The Deep Wine

By far the most daring of them all, but the absolute trendiest, is the oxblood lip! Although this colour can seem intimidating at first, with minimal eye and cheek makeup it can be pulled off flawlessly for the fall season. Deep wines add an immediate sultriness and an alluring elegance unlike any other shade. Try Mac Diva or Black Cherry from Revlon’s Super Lustrous lipstick line to achieve this look.

Pro Tip: Lightly dab the colour on your lips and blend for a lighter tint of colour as an alternative to the full-blown dark lip.

Here’s to 6 more reasons to be obsessed with all things fall. Be bold this season: step out of your comfort zone and don’t be afraid to make a statement in your lip colours!
