5 Subtle Ways to Ace Your Next Job Interview

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wilfrid Laurier chapter.

1. Wear a memorable accessory

Whether it is a colourful pair of glasses, a cute new necklace, or a classic bracelet, an accessory could be your key to employment success. Not only does an interesting accessory give the interviewer something to glance at while talking, more importantly it is a detail that will make you more memorable, and thus stand out from your competition.

2. Shake hands firmly

An interview is an environment where your mannerisms will be scrutinized, and you only have one opportunity to make a good first impression. A weak handshake for some employers can be a deal-breaker, but by having a firm handshake it exhibits underlying confidence in yourself and your abilities. If you are being interviewed by multiple people remember to shake hands with and greet each interviewer individually.

3. Pick an outfit in-between casual and over-the-top fancy

Many interviewers want to know you will fit into the “culture” of their business environment. By wearing a business causal outfit, it demonstrates that you are aware of what is socially acceptable in an office environment, and thus will be more likely to fit in and get along with the rest of the staff.

4. Avoid fidgeting at all costs

Under the high stress environment of an interview, some people may find it incredibly difficult not to fidget, but this can be one of the most distracting things you can do. As opposed to listening to what you’re saying, the interviewer will now be focused on your nervous habit.

5. Make confident eye contact

While this tip might seem obvious, under the pressure of an interview, people often forget basic but important social skills. Eye contact is essential to not only connect you with your interviewer, but also demonstrate that you are a confident individual. If you are being interviewed by multiple people, remember to divide eye-contact equally.

Now go out there and show that interview who’s boss!

You will typically see me with a large cup of tea and browsing social media under the fairy lights and reading up on my favourite lady bosses (Mindy Kaling let me be you please). Also my trivia regarding superheroes is endless. I have more music than time to listen to and someone definitely should consider taking away my blogging privileges. My love for pop culture is limitless and Netflix is the true MVP in my opinion. Contributor writer for HerCampus Laurier Stalk me and let's be friends here: Insta & Twitter: webofem
