Do you have the winter skin blues? With the winter here in full swing, your skin will need some more help and protection from the harsh environment. Just because the weather is cold and dry, doesn’t mean your skin has to look and feel that way too! Follow our tips to glowing skin this winter.
1. Water, water, water!
Everyone tells you how important water is for your skin and they’re right! To get glowing skin,
youneed to be hydrated on the inside first. Make sure you drink lots of water, carry a bottle with you wherever you go. Herbal tea is also great in the cold months. So drink up and make sure your skin doesn’t go thirsty.
2. Exfoliate
Exfoliation brightens the skin and helps remove dead skin cells from your body. Add this to your routine once a week and your skin will feel fresh, but be creful where skin is more delicate like the chest, stomach and neck. During the week, rather than using a coarse scrub, use some moisturizing body wash with a wash cloth and buff gently.
3. Moisturize
Moisturizing is more important than ever during the winter months, your skin will need more moisture than before during the dry season. You have to find the right body cream for your skin type; if you have dry skin, look for something like ceramides or colloidal oatmeal. An oil based moisturizer works well with naturally dry skin and it prevents moisture loss, try choosing one in ointment form as it will contain 80% oil. For oily skin, oil based moisturizers can be too heavy so try using something with light humectants like hyaluronic acid. For both skin types, don’t wash your face with hot water as it will dry out your skin even more. If you use toner, make sure to use an alcohol-free toner as
alcohol can be very drying for any skin type. If you’re unsure of what products to use, a good idea is to head over to Shoppers and ask someone, even the pharmacist. Â
4. Sunscreen
Just because the summer sun is gone, doesn’t mean you get to say goodbye to your sunscreen as well. Before you go outside, apply sunscreen with at least SPF 15 or more, this will help protect your skin from the harsh winter elements. A good idea is to use sunscreen that contains moisturizer to protect your skin from the dry environment.
5. Flaxseed Oil
In addition to water, flaxseed oil is another great way to moisturize your body from the inside. It
doesn’t taste very nice but it does contain essential fatty acids that are great for your skin. You canpurchase it in oil and capsule form from drugstores.
6. Oil Bath
Who doesn’t love taking a long, relaxing bath? Try adding a spoonful of your favourite oil to yourbath, it smells great and leaves your skin nourished. If you’re not a bath girl, try adding a few drops of oil to your body lotion for extra hydration.
7. Say No to Blow Drying
I know it’s a necessity to many of us but your hair dryer is not your friend in the winter; the hot hair dries out your scalp. Try the tousled look or wavy style this season to keep away from the dryer. If you have difficult to manage hair, try different hair styles like a fish-tale braid or the beautiful buns that are big this season; they look chic and gorgeous and you don’t have to worry about your hair.
8. Don’t lick Your Lips
I know it’s tempting, especially in this dry climate, to lick your lips but if you do you’ll chap your lips even more. Always have alip balm handy with you wherever you go and apply it when you’re tempted to lick your lips. If you have really chapped lips, Vaseline is a great solution. Apply it before bed every night or as lip gloss and you’re lips will be as luscious as ever.Â
