If you’re anything like me, you love clothing, but you’re also passionate about sustainability. These two things can come into conflict with each other.

On the one hand, fashion is important because dressing well gives me confidence and an avenue for self-expression. On the other hand, the fast fashion industry is destroying the environment by placing productivity over sustainability, nevermind the literal tons of waste that it creates.

Thrifting is a great way to shop sustainably, not to mention these clothes often come at an amazing price. I do want to say, however, that thrifting is not always entirely eco-friendly. Overconsumption can still be harmful, even when purchasing used clothes. That’s why it’s important to only buy what you need and to be mindful that you are not the only customer shopping at the thrift store.

That said, let’s get into my favourite thrifted articles of clothing!

1. Black and White Plaid Pants: My thrifted pants are loose-fitting and super comfortable, but their classic pattern gives me an elevated look. I’ve received so many compliments on them from fashionable friends and even a manager at Rona!

2. Squirrel Sweater: Yep, you heard that right. I have a squirrel sweater. It’s hand knit, green and brown, with a squirrel on the front and acorns across the hem. The cotton wool is very cozy, and the design is adorable. Not only is it just a great sweater to have, but the fact that it was handcrafted by someone makes it so much more special. I wish the person who made it knew how much I love to wear it.

3. Little Black Dress: I’m sure you’ve heard before that everyone’s wardrobe needs a little black dress; I was able to find mine at a thrift store! The side cut out and one sleeve silhouette  provides a unique twist on the classic style. It’s perfect for all kinds of events. I’ve worn it on date night, as part of a Halloween costume, and to a New Year’s Party, just to name a few.

I sincerely hope that you will have as much shopping success as I have. Happy thrifting!
