The 5th annual International Week encourages the Western and London community to learn about different cultural traditions and international opportunities.

More than 60 events will be held across campus, including Western University’s King’s, Brescia and Huron Colleges.

The activities will showcase cultural performances, foreign films, world music concerts, international-themed lectures, and more.

Most activities are free to attend, but some do require registration or have limited seating.

The World’s Challenge Challenge event is highly anticipated by students this year. The challenge requires students to form diverse teams and present a solution to a worldly problem in front of a panel of judges.

The winning team will receive a $1,000 scholarship per team member to be used on a Western-sanctioned international opportunity, such as internships or studying abroad.

The winners will also move on to compete in the International World’s Challenge Challenge in June 2018 at Western University. This opportunity will provide them with the chance to compete against university students from around the world and win $10,000 per team member.

It takes approximately 110 student coordinators and volunteers to successfully execute Western’s International Week events.

Fourth-year Medical Science student Seongryoung Han is the International Week Assistant Volunteer Coordinator and the General Volunteer Team Leader. She joined the International Week team to give back to Western University’s international community.

“Ever since my second year, I have been an active member at Western International as an English Conversation Program (ECP) Leader, Welcome Team Member and also as a Peer Guide. While these positions allowed me to connect with many amazing individuals, I wanted to do something more to contribute and what better opportunity is there than International Week filled with a lot of fun and meaningful events,” said Han.

Her favourite part of the week-long festivities is meeting new people, including working alongside this year’s Volunteer Coordinator Team, the International Week Coordinators and the volunteers.

“They are passionate, brilliant, kind-hearted and truly amazing individuals and I learn something new from them everyday,” said Han.

In addition, individuals can enter the passport contest for an opportunity to win a $500 scholarship towards an international learning experience and Western-branded merchandise.
