6 Natural Beauty Remedies You Probably Already Have

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Western chapter.

As a student on a budget, it’s not always wallet-friendly to constantly be buying beauty products. Luckily, there are many natural beauty products that you can find in your own house!

1. A DIY Facial: Baking Soda

Baking soda is a cheap alternative for fancy facial scrubs, and is just as effective. Mix one part baking soda with four parts water, and apply for three minutes before washing off. The granules of sodium bicarbonate will buff away dead skin cells that clog your pores while still being gentle enough to use on sensitive skin.

2. A dry skin remedy: Lemons

Citric acid is a god-send for dry elbows, heels and knees. The citric acid will remove the dead skin cells on these problem areas and immediately unveil smoother skin underneath. Cut a lemon in half and rub on whatever area is too dry.

3. An acne killer: Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is just as effective as benzoyl peroxide in helping to reduce acne, while not having the same damaging reddening and drying effects. The antibacterial properties also help to ward off future breakouts.

4. A nail bleacher: Ginger Ale

Drinking pop may not be good for you, but ginger ale can work wonders for yellowed nails. Soaking your nails for ten minutes in ginger ale will allow the soluble salts in the liquid to naturally bleach your nails.

5. An under-eye treatment: Parsley

Parsley is rich in Vitamin K, which, when applied topically, will reduce blood flow to the visible blood vessels in the eye area. Apply as a paste with plain yogurt for 20 minutes.

6. An all-over beauty remedy: Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is an amazing product that you need to have. It’s fairly cheap and can be found in most grocery stores. Coconut oil has strong disinfectant and antimicrobial properties, Vitamin E content and proteins. The benefits of coconut oil can be experienced many ways:

  • Coconut oil can be used all over your body as a moisturizer, as well as on delicate areas like your face and eyes.
  • As a hair mask, apply coconut oil from your roots to your ends and leave it from anywhere between 15 minutes to overnight to deeply condition your hair before you wash it.
  • Coconut oil is by far the best makeup remover — not only does it remove even the toughest waterproof mascara, but it is also a great eye cream and conditions your lashes!
