13 Halloween Costumes You Can Easily Make

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Western chapter.

Halloween is quickly sneaking up on us!  It’s only a week away and between that and the fact that it’s midterm season means it can be difficult deciding your costume.  Buying costumes can get expensive and making a costume can take up a lot of your time.  Don’t worry, we’ve got your back! Here are some simple costumes that you can make in less than a day. Have a white collared shirt?  Black skirt or dress? You’re already halfway done a costume!

1. Tina Belcher (Bob’s Burgers)

All you need is a light blue shirt and a navy blue skirt to create the look of this loveable member of the Belcher family.  To add on the small details, find some red tube socks and buy a yellow hair clip from the drugstore.  If you have an old pair of converse in the back of your closet, even better!  For her glasses, find that pair of 3D glasses you still have and pop out the lenses!

What you need:

  • navy/black skirt
  • light blue tee
  • long tube socks
  • yellow hair clip
  • converse sneakers
  • old 3D glasses (pop out the lenses)

2. Kiki (Kiki’s Delivery Service)

This is a great idea for a Studio Ghibli fan. You get to be a witch, but with a twist. Find a dark blue/purple dress and a red ribbon for her hair bow. If you happen to own a brown side bag, even better!  To take it to the next step, find your old black stuffed cat plushie to be Kiki’s sidekick Gigi.

What you need:

  • purple dress
  • red bow/ribbon
  • brown side bag
  • stuffed black cat
  • broom (optional)

3. Suzy Bishop (Moonrise Kingdom)

Any Wes Anderson movie fans out there?  If you want to take on a quirky role for Halloween this year, Suzy Bishop is a great (and easy) choice.  In addition to her pink collared dress, add on some white socks and don’t forget her binoculars.  For the extra details, wear sparkly blue eyeshadow and make her insect earrings by gluing images of green bugs onto a pair of dangly earrings.

What you need:

  • pink dress
  • binoculars
  • long white socks
  • earrings
  • blue eyeshadow

4. Holly Golightly

One of the most iconic dresses of all time.  Everyone will instantly know who you are by simply adding the right accessories to that black dress in your closet.  Holly’s accessories include her tiara, pearl necklaces and black gloves.

What you need:

  • black dress
  • tiara
  • pearl necklace(s)
  • black gloves

5. Wednesday Addams

Wednesday’s look consists of one colour: black.  The most important part of the costume are her signature pigtails and her frown.  If you want to pay more homage to her original look, wear a shirt with a white collar under your black dress.

What you need:

  • black dress
  • white collared shirt
  • black tights
  • black shoes

6. Mary Poppins

Here’s a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious costume for you! Dress up as your favourite flying nanny by wearing a red bow tie with a white shirt. Pull your hair back into a bun, grab an umbrella and you’re all set to go!

What you need:

  • white dress shirt
  • black skirt
  • black tights
  • red bow tie
  • bowler hat
  • black umbrella (optional)

7. Han Solo (Star Wars)

Embrace your inner Star Wars fangirl!  Dress up as everyone’s favourite scruffy-looking-nerf-herder.  A white collared shirt and a black vest is the main part of his look.  If you want to add something extra, get a brown teddy bear to be your Chewbacca!

What you need:

  • black pants
  • black riding boots
  • off white shirt
  • black vest
  • brown belt

8. Mia Wallace (Pulp Fiction)

There are so many costumes you can do with that white collared dress shirt in the back of your closet.  Put on your reddest lipstick and find a black wig with bangs and you’ve got a perfect Mia Wallace costume!

What you need:

  • white dress shirt
  • black pants
  • black flats
  • black wig with bangs
  • red lipstick

9. Sandy (Grease)

Bring out your musical side!  Just a heads up; you’ll have to bust out your best curling iron and need a lot of hairspray to achieve that perm of hers!  Dress in all black and find a pair of red high heels.

What you need:

  • black off-the-shoulder top
  • black leggings
  • red heels

10. Spinelli (Recess)

Here’s one that’ll give you a throwback to your childhood!  Spinelli is one character that anyone who watched Family Channel would instantly recognize and let’s be real: who DIDN’T watch Family Channel?

What you need:

  • leather jacket
  • orange dress
  • striped socks
  • black boots
  • orange beanie

11. The Eleventh Doctor

This one is for the Whovian. There are over thirteen doctors you can pick to be for Halloween, but Matt Smith’s Doctor is probably one of the easier ones to recreate. Make sure you have your red bow tie and fez (because “bowties and fezes are cool”).

What you need:

  • white dress shirt
  • black pants
  • black ankle boots
  • tweed jacket/brown cardigan
  • red suspenders
  • red bow tie
  • sonic screwdriver (optional)

12. Paper Bag Princess

It’s a different spin on what you would think of when you think “princess costume,” but is there anyone in this generation that hasn’t heard of The Paper Bag Princess?  An easy way to make her costume is to buy a paper leaf bag and cut away!  Since the bag is made out of paper it’s easy to tape together.  Add a gold crown and a few dirt smears and you’re all set!
