The Tale of Troye Sivan

Troye Sivan, an Australian singer/songwriter/actor, has been in the music game since 2014 and in the Youtuber game since 2012. With the release of his new album, Something to Give Each Other, he has reached a new audience of younger people unfamiliar with his past before his new hit song “Rush”. So, if you are new to Sivan, here is a brief history lesson and an ode to Troye’s new found success and resurgence into mainstream media.

I personally have been a fan of Troye since I was in 8th grade, even being lucky enough to get to see him live with Dua Lipa opening. The only full length album he had out at that point was Blue Neighborhood and I was obsessed. I wanted to know anything and everything about him. I went back to his Youtube channel where he started it all with funny videos, songs, and collabs with other Youtubers like Tyler Oakley. He released his EP, TRXYE in 2014 with the popular songs like “Happy Little Pill” and “The Fault in Our Stars” (very 2014 angst). After his release of Blue Neighborhood in 2015, he stopped posting youtube videos and began to focus more on being a musician. Blue Neighborhood was a huge success, topping charts with “Youth” and “Wild”. He even released a self produced music video trilogy with “Wild”, “Fools”, and “Talk Me Down”, a story about two boys who grew up together falling in love, but ultimately being torn apart by their non accepting family. Needless to say, it put him on the map as a respected musical artist. His next album release was “Bloom” in 2018, an album that encompassed Troye’s sexual exploration and more sensual vibe than the last album. Bloom had songs like “My My My!”, “Strawberries & Cigarettes”, and the title song “Bloom” that put it at number four on the US Billboard Charts. From 2019-2023, Troye had been out of the spotlight, but still releasing singles like “Angel Baby” and “i’m so tired..” with Lauv. More recently in 2023, Troye released his single “Rush” and it absolutely blew up. The music video and Troye Sivan started trending again, hence the resurgence of his music to a new generation.

Now that you understand the summary of Troye Sivan’s career, we can move to the present. I want to clear up the accusations that Sivan is an “industry plant” and he just “came out of nowhere” to the people on social media who have never seen him before, or was a Youtuber stan in the early 2010s. Troye is back in the spotlight where he should be, where not only he is respected for his music, but also for his music videos. “Rush” was paired with a music video that is unapologetically super gay and a dance that quickly went viral on Tik Tok. Which is where Troye’s new audience has been reached. He also made a remix to “Rush” with popular artist Pink Pantheress and kpop star Hyunjin from Stray Kids, reaching another new audience of hyperpop fans and kpop stans.

With more people tuning into what Sivan is going to do next, he releases his shocking next single. “Got Me Started” surprised many people with the sample Troye used from “Shooting Stars” by Bag Raiders, which you might know from that weird shooting star meme from like 2017. When I first heard it, I was absolutely entranced by the way Troye smoothly put the sample into the song, like it hasn’t been claimed by the meme community. I was also entranced and addicted to the other viral dance Troye Sivan did in the music video, putting another song in the eye of people on social media. My absolute favorite however from this era of Troye has to be “One of Your Girls”. Not only is the song hypotonic and sexy, but the music again is breaking the internet. Troye Sivan is seen giving Ross Lynch (Austin Moon and all-around hot man) a lap dance, as a woman. I think more people were actually gushing about how gorgeous Troye is as a woman than Ross Lynch… as they should! This new album has again put Troye back into the public eye, but also stapled his reputation as a creative musical artist that had people anticipating his next move.

As a long time fan of Troye, I am so excited and happy to see he is getting the recognition he deserves. I can’t wait for what he has next in store in his artistic journey. The resurgence of Troye Sivan is here, and the tale of Troye Sivan will be continued!
