Curl Talk: Accepting Your Curly Hair From The Girl Who Straightens It

Put that straightener down. This one is for the girls who haven’t gotten the courage to put down the straightener yet. Because trust me, it’s not just you, it’s me too. So let’s embrace the wave, the curl, the wind blown frizzy little mess, together.

I feel like everywhere I go, I see a confident woman with the most perfect set of bouncy, voluptuous curls upon her crown of a head. And I begin to think to myself, how can I achieve this level of awesomeness? How can I be as confident with my hair as every other person with a curl pattern?

But it’s not about how to style your curls, or about what products to use (sorry this isn’t a tutorial on how to get the perfect head of curls). No, this is about accepting your curls. Because let’s face it, not every girl is going to have the same curl pattern. Everyone’s hair is different, and it’s a matter of being okay with the beautiful set of crazy on your head.

Personally, I’ve been experimenting with my hair for some time now, but I seem to keep going back to my old roots. I blow it out every time to save the hassle of waking up with a mess of hair in the morning. But we need to start bringing back the crazy, imperfect curls. Because let’s face it, imperfect is so in. Who wants perfect anyways, it’s too unachievable and unreal.

Someone’s gotta hold down the frizzy hair style.

I feel like you know you’ve reached that major point when you’re able to rock your curls at big events without even thinking of doing a blowout instead. I envy all the girls that are able to wear their natural hair at bigger events and have their level of confidence.

But let’s dive deeper. Think of all the missed opportunities there are for someone to say, “You know, I love your curly hair today.” Imagine the different hair styles, moments, and memories that could be made by embracing you.

I feel like with social media, tv shows, or even with our idols, things get way too glamorized, and it gets to a point. People should tap further into their unique features because that’s what really makes you stand out.

Three of my absolute bestest friends in the whole wide world have naturally curly hair and when I tell you I’m completely mesmerized when they walk into a room, I’m honestly not lying. Now let’s face it, we wouldn’t be best friends without seeing each other in vulnerable states or late at night before bed. So I’ve been able to see their fresh morning hair or their super late night curl rituals. And honestly, I love every part of it.

The mess has its own story. That frizz that you’re so worried about was created by the best, well needed, 12 hour sleep of your life. That imperfect curl was messed up by twirling it around your finger at the boy you think is really cute. That perfect gel cast was tangled by the beach day you spent with your friends. Each imperfection has its own story, memory, thought, or experience attached to it. And I think it’s really amazing how your hair can hold all that. They say hair holds memories, so why not keep them in there for a while.

I’m not asking you to ditch the straightener completely, trust me I know it’s a hard ask. I’m asking for you to try and experiment with embracing your natural you. So let’s say it together. Put down the straightener, and go accept the beautiful pattern you were born with. Because no one is going to have the same unique set of hair you have, so flaunt it.
