Recent Purchases I Didn’t Know I Needed

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WesCo chapter.

Sometimes you didn’t know you needed something until you bought it, which happens a lot for me. Some things are investments, but some things are cheap little buys that improve things greatly. These are some of my recent ones.

Alarm Clock

Now I don’t actually use it for an alarm – I need at least three separate alarms to get out of bed – but it’s great as a quick way to know what time it is when you wake up in the middle of the night. My brain doesn’t usually let me sleep all the way through the night, so I end up waking up while it’s still dark out without knowing the time. I don’t like looking at my phone for this because I know I’ll end up checking any notifications I have or scrolling down social media to “get back to sleep” for hours. Now, though, I can just roll over, click the light button, and see that it’s 3:24am, and go right back to sleep. This is especially helpful after gasping awake from a nightmare or stress dream, since I can ground myself in something real without getting on my phone.

Weighted Blanket

The hype is worth it, everyone. I love heavy blankets in the first place, so a weighted blanket has been something I’ve coveted for years at this point. Then, my mom asked what she could buy me for Valentine’s Day, and I asked her for a weighted blanket. So she got me one (thank you, I love you, Mom), and it’s been so great. I’m one of those people who enjoys being laid on, so now it’s like I’m always being laid on – like a tiny 15 pound person is laying on me.

Grown-Up Shoes

I’ll fess up – I’m a sneaker person. If I could just wear sneakers, I would for the rest of my life. Alas, I am quickly approaching the years where I need to look like an adult in order to be taken seriously. So I’ve been on the hunt for a nice pair of black heeled booties that would go well with a skirt and tights, and found my match at Marshalls (the most magical place in the world). They were on clearance for $16, so I immediately snatched them up. Now, I feel like I have a nice pair of semi-formal shoes that I can finally wear to an interview or school events. No more Adidas to Junior Marshals.

New Binder System

I’ve been using the same binder and divider system since I was in high school, and I was getting sick of it. Then, my mom told me she’d let me spend $50 at Staples for Christmas, and I went wild – anyone who knows me knows how much I love office supplies. At Staples, I got their ARC System, which looks so professional and grown up. I feel like an Office Woman when I pull my notebook out.

I guess the point of this is to say that you shouldn’t be afraid to invest in things that will improve your life! Investing in good quality clothing and small stuff like alarm clocks is worth it.
