What? I Can’t Hear You Over the Lack of Communication

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wells chapter.

We have hundreds of different languages on the planet and we have the resources to communicate with anyone despite this difference. So, then why is it so hard for people to communicate with the ones they love?

I’ve found it useful to actually share your thoughts and feelings with one another. (I know, shocking, right?) No one will know how you’re feeling if you don’t tell them. None of this guessing game shit either, be straight forward and tell that person how you feel.

It’s taken me seven years of being in this relationship with my partner to understand how important communication is, not just in the dating world, but in friendships, school, work, everywhere! Communication is key!

The importance of communication really hit me the last two weeks when my partner and I have been moving into our first apartment together. If you thought communication was important before, just wait until you live with your partner and decide to start decorating. You really need to communicate your thoughts.

I’ve been guilty of falling into the same trap of not talking: telling my partner I’m fine when I’m not, having my ex believe everything is fine between us when it’s not, and running away from my roommate when I have a problem with her.

It’s not easy to tell someone how you’re feeling (trust me), but it’s for the best to do so. If I didn’t tell my partner how I was feeling, we probably wouldn’t be together anymore or moving into our apartment. If I didn’t explain what was bothering me, I probably would still be walking on eggshells around my roommate. Still working on the ex communication though… but don’t we all struggle with that?

I know I’m not the best at communication (obviously), but at least I try. You should try too because we won’t get anywhere in life and with the people we love if we don’t communicate.

Also, say ‘I love you’ because it could really make someone’s day.

My name is Parker Howell. I love to spend my time writing (mostly poetry) and cuddling with my cat when he's not biting me. I'm majoring in Creative Writing at Wells College so writing is a major influence in my life. I love cacti, corgis, and chai tea.
