Things You Don’t Expect to Miss in College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wells chapter.

A little over a month into my first year of college, I’ve realized there are lots of things I miss that I didn’t expect to before I came. There are lots of things about home that I never appreciated before I had to leave them behind, including:

  1. Your mom. You know you’ll miss her, but you won’t anticipate nearly how much.
  2. The feeling of walking into your house after a long day.
  3. Knowing all the roads of your hometown.
  4. A shower you don’t have to wear shoes in.
  5. Knowing everything that’s going on and not having to be updated all at once over FaceTime.
  6. Your dishwasher.
  7. Good food that doesn’t come out of a microwaveable cup.
  8. The feeling of sleeping in your own bed. It’s not much different from the one in your dorm room, but it feels different, because it’s home.
  9. Being able to choose your furniture.
  10. Being able to light candles.
  11. Privacy.
  12. Fighting with your siblings. You don’t even get to fight now, they just hang up.
  13. The smell of your dad’s dark roast in the coffee maker.
  14. Your dad. You know you’ll miss him, but you won’t anticipate nearly how much.
  15. Feeling included. Sure, it would be ridiculous for your family to invite you to go with them when you’re 300 miles away, but it still feels wrong when they don’t.
  16. Not having the realization of how lonely you actually are. You make friends, and there are tons of people everywhere, but it will never feel the same as it did back home.
