I don’t know about you, but I am currently the most broke I have ever been since I started making my own money. I can argue that the more money you make, the more money you spend which is sometimes true, but really, money is so hard to make and so easy to spend. I have been trying very hard this semester to budget and watch what I put my money into because as a student my main priorities revolve around my academics, not money, even though I think about money so much which is also a problem in itself. Here are some of the struggles I have faced as a broke college student that you can probably relate to.

Turning down plans because you don’t want to spend money: When the weekend approaches, my friends always want to make spontaneous plans that my wallet cannot afford. Asking about prices before verifying plans is something I still do. I never exactly deny plans, but I know damn well I won’t be attending! Getting off campus and doing things with my friends is something I enjoy doing but it can be expensive too.

Groceries are expensive. I realized that I underestimated how expensive groceries are. As a broke gal, I religiously buy store brand rather than name brands because they are generally cheaper. Just a small grocery list can leave you with 80 dollars less in your bank account. I seriously do not know how my mother kept food on the table, and then some, with five children. Thanks, Ma, you’re the real MVP!

Sales are evil and a scam. (Not really but kind of) They are only an excuse to spend some money. You think you’re getting a deal, but sales are just a way to justify spending money we don’t have. There is no shame in taking advantage of a sale, but you don’t always have to.

One of the perks of being a college student is using our student discounts. Whenever you step off campus to do anything, make sure to bring your student ID with you. In many places, especially in college towns, business are aware that they are surrounded by students and will usually offer discounts when you present your ID.

It may sound silly, but I carry my water bottle with me everywhere, so I don’t feel pressured in purchasing drinks. I also always order water instead of other beverages when I go out to eat. It the more affordable options and well, it is also healthier.

Lastly, You appreciate everything your family has done for you, even more, when you have to start taking care of yourself. I have learned to appreciate my family so much. They have taken care of me all my life, and ever since I started college, I realized how much goes into raising another person and I can’t even sufficiently take care of myself. So again, thanks mom you’re the real MVP.
