What It’s Like to Be in a Long Distance Relationship

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Waterloo chapter.

I’m not really the type of person to be gushing about my boyfriend or even about being in a relationship, but I feel like I’ve had enough experience over the last few years to share what it’s like moving away from your significant other.

1. Be Optimistic

Don’t be the type to break up with your person before one of you even moves away; you never know how things will work out. Give it a shot, and if it doesn’t work out, you’ll be okay! Trust me.

2. Be Willing to Make Compromises

Of course every relationship requires both people to compromise, but there’s something different about having to do that with someone who’s far away. This could mean small things like organizing your schedule around that person’s schedule or staying awake a little bit longer. Hopefully, the other person will notice your effort and reciprocate.

3. Try Doing Something Together

For us, our thing was watching a TV show together while on the phone. We’d have something to look forward to and talk about whenever we both had free time.

4. Make Plans

If possible, try to plan your days off, keeping in mind that you could finally have the chance to see that person. Try to make a plan well in advance so both of you are well aware of what’s coming up and hopefully be excited for it.

5. Don’t Restrict Yourself

This might just be a personal thing, but I like to do what I want to do. I mean, just because I’m in a relationship, doesn’t mean I can’t go out and have a good time with my friends. It just means that I know my limitations and need to stay within my boundaries. The same goes for being okay with letting the other person do what they want. You’re both individuals and should be able to trust each other no matter how far apart you are.

Basically what I’m trying to say is, don’t give up so easily; it can work out – I’ve seen it happen.
