Surviving Winter Blues

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Waterloo chapter.

With the first snowfall of the year knocking on our doors, you’re surely starting to feel a case of the winter blues coming on. Although winter has only just begun, I’m sure this cold weather already has everybody considering hibernation for the rest of winter. Here are some tips to help you get through this cold season.

1) Take up a new hobby

Hobbies are a great way to keep yourself busy and avoid  winter blues. Take a risk and find yourself a hobby to enjoy over the next few months. If you don’t already have one in mind, consider taking a class at Michael’s such as painting or knitting. These classes are held every week and can be found online. With Christmas right around the corner, consider doing some Christmas baking! What cheers people up more than the smell of freshly baked cookies?

If you aren’t the artsy type, there’s still plenty of opportunities. Consider getting a gym membership, reading a new book, or start a new season on Netflix.

2) Decorate for the holidays!

With winter on our doorsteps, it means Christmas is almost here! Take a break from your studies and get in the Christmas spirit. Make your home a little cozier by putting up holiday decorations. Not only will this make you happier, but it will also help you prepare for the fast-approaching holidays.

3) Get started on your Christmas shopping

A little retail therapy may be the pick-me-up that you need! This is a great way to get out for the day. Taking the time to pick out some great gifts for your friends and family will surely boost your mood and help you later avoid the last-minute stress of shopping on Christmas Eve.

4) Make plans with your friends

Spending time with friends will give you the extra support you need when the winter blues start to set in. Make plans with your friends to go out and participate in the festivities this time of year, like skating or snowman-building. Or if you prefer, spend the night in, have a holiday movie marathon, and decorate a gingerbread house. Spice things up and have a competition among friends to see who can decorate the best house!

5) Enjoy the scenery

Since fall is coming to an end, everybody’s missing beautiful colours and aesthetic instagram posts. Have no fear; with winter quickly approaching, the glistening snow, Christmas lights, and late sunrises will brighten up everyone’s day. On the nicer days, take the opportunity to enjoy a walk through your neighbourhood!

6) Try a new type of tea

Visit David’s Tea and sample their holiday collection. Take a chance on a new type of tea that you’ve never tried, then cozy up with a cup before bed.

If you’re not a tea person, enjoy seasonal drinks like hot apple cider and peppermint hot chocolate.

7) Buy some holiday scented candles

With Christmas quickly approaching, going into stores such as Bath & Body Works becomes everyone’s happy place. Make your room a little cozier by adding a new scent. My personal favorites are the Winter Candy Apple body-wash and ‘Tis the Season candle!

8) Find a new favourite coffee shop

Kitchener and Waterloo are filled with so many cute coffee shops it’s impossible to visit them all. Go out, find a new favourite, and try one of their specialty holiday drinks. If you have a lot of exams coming up, this can be great motivation to study or just hang out. My recommendations: Princess Cafe and Smile Tiger Cafe

9) Know that the warmer weather is coming!

Although winter has only just begun, have faith that with each passing day, we’re a little closer to spring!
