A Girl’s Guide to Getting Involved at UW

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Waterloo chapter.

Clubs & Socieities day was last week and if you didn’t have time to go, don’t worry! We’ve complied some great involvement opportunites for you here, check them out:

For the Girly Girl…

Check out Greek Life!

You may not have known, but the University of Waterloo is home to three sororities – Kappa Kappa Gamma, Alpha Omicron Pi, and Sigma Lambda Gamma. Both of the former are international sororities, whereas SLG is Waterloo’s very own. Getting involved in a sorority is an incredible way to find friends who become sisters, take part in Instagrammable activities (pumpkin patch field trip, anyone?) and buy an unnecessary amount of craft supplies from Michaels. Recruitment is happening THIS WEEK and potential new members must attend at least one event held by each sorority, so be sure to get the details at https://www.facebook.com/uWaterlooSororities/

For the Girl Who Loves Writing…

Check out Her Campus Waterloo! (hey that’s us!)

HerCampus is an online community for female college students that’s used around the globe. Members write lighthearted commentary on their experience with university life, often accompanied by lots of GIFs! Writers for HerCampus have gone on to work for many cool places, such as; Vogue, Cosmopolitan, and the Washington Post – girls from UW have credited HC with being the reason they landed their Co-Op Placement. Get involved by coming out to our first meeting this Wednesday at 7pm in MC4058! Check out the Facebook event here – https://www.facebook.com/events/188663598227176/?notif_t=plan_user_invited&notif_id=1474919149265794

For the Strong, Independent Woman…

Check out the Women’s Centre!

The Women’s Centre is UW’s feminist community that focuses on equal rights, self-love, and sexual empowerment. These ideas are promoted through events that include a feminist poetry slam, educational discussion nights, and bust casting. Not only that, but the centre is also a UW student’s go-to place for condoms, pads, tampons, and feminist friends of all genders! Although volunteer applications have now closed, you can keep up to date with The Women’s Centre’s events at https://www.facebook.com/uwwomenscentre

For the Musical Girl…

Check out the AccaBellas!

The AccaBellas are Waterloo’s all-female a capella group that strives to combine music and movement into a striking duo. If you’ve ever watched Pitch Perfect and have a dream to become part of the Barden Bellas then be sure to check out their website for YouTube sneak peeks and more details on on how to get involved at http://www.uwacc.com/acabellas

For the Fierce Girl…

Check out Fashion for Change!

Fashion for Change is an annual fashion show and dance performance in which all proceeds are donated to Free the Children. It’s also an amazing opportunity for women and men to express themselves and look cool af doing it. The show itself takes place in March, and is preceded by months and months of fairly intensive practices in preparation for the final routine. But don’t worry, you don’t need any dance experience – just the confidence to slay it on stage! Check out the Facebook page here – https://www.facebook.com/fashionforchange/
