Change with the Leaves: How to Embrace Change this Fall Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Waterloo chapter.

Every morning when I wake up, the air is a little more crisp, more leaves have fallen, & more cozy sweaters are being worn. Fall is an interesting season, especially in Canada. There is little hesitation before the weather quickly changes from hot to cool.

Similar to changes in nature that occur during the fall, a lot of changes in our lives occur during this time. School starts up again, new jobs, new friends, new organization of things etc….a lot of NEW! Especially this year with COVID-19 taking the world into a state of constant change, we’ve had more new changes than ever.

Even though this autumn brings a lot of new changes, I’m determined to shift my perspective on change. Change is so important for us. It teaches us new things, connects us with new people, helps us find new joys, and so much more. Personally, I want to embrace all the change that comes this season, and I want you to join me!

Here are a couple of tips on how to embrace change this fall season:

Deep clean

In the spring we usually do spring cleaning, but in the fall it’s just as important to do a deep clean. Start off with a fresh slate of cleanliness by organizing your workspace, kitchen, bedroom, and anything else you feel needs to be revamped. Doing a deep fall clean helps to clean out the spring/summer clutter. It creates new space for all the new things that are about to come.

Create time for stillness

For most people, the past summer months have had a lot going on, and you’ve probably been doing a lot with others. This fall season, make time for yourself by setting aside “me” time. I honestly think this should be a lifestyle thing. Always remember to make time for yourself. Create time for stillness activities such as meditating, journaling, taking a walk, etc. All these activities help to make you feel centred and more aware.

Practice gratitude

Practicing gratitude is actually one of the best things you can do. Gratitude makes you happier. Practice writing down what you’re grateful for each day and tell others you appreciate them! There is so much to be thankful for and so much appreciation to be given.

Positive affrimations

This is another one of my favourites! Positive affirmations are a great way to keep your mind radiating positivity. Positive words such as, “I can do it,” “I am capable of overcoming this obstacle,” and “I will be successful” are extremely uplifting words that will shift your mindset into believing that you can take on the new. When you start believing you can do it, you will do it!

Let the changes come to you

Most importantly, let the change come to you! During the fall, we are constantly hearing all about change and the new but it’s important to consider how you approach change. Change in the fall doesn’t need you to chase after it, but instead wait for it to come to you. Instead of embracing change in the fall, start with getting rid of the old to create space to let the new come in!

Those are my 5 tips for embracing change & new this fall season. Simply put, fall is essentially the art of letting go of the old along with the act of taking in the new! You can do this!
