8 Things to be Thankful for at Home on Thanksgiving

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Waterloo chapter.

As a student, you have plenty of things to be thankful for this Thanksgiving: the opportunity to pursue higher education, your school, co-op opportunities, and the fall break, just to name a few. But if you’re lucky enough to go home for Thanksgiving, there are some extra-special things at home you might want to take a moment to appreciate this weekend. Here are a few to consider:

1. THE FOOD. There’s nothing like going home to turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, etc. when you haven’t had a good home-cooked meal in months. If you’re lucky, you might even get some leftovers to take back to school with you. Score!

2. Seeing your family. Whether you’d ever admit it or not, you probably kind of miss them, and talking to your parents on the phone just isn’t the same as being in the same room as them.

3. Driving. Finally, a weekend where you don’t have to wait for the bus if you want to go anywhere. Even something as simple as being asked to go pick up your little brother from hockey practice can actually be fun if you haven’t been behind the wheel since the summer.

4.Seeing your hometown in all its fall glory. If this is your first weekend home since school started, it was probably too hot to even go outside last time you were home. But now suddenly, all the trees are covered in gorgeous colours. When did that happen?! Doesn’t matter, just appreciate it.

5. Sleeping in your own bed. Your generic bed in your generic student apartment has got nothing on your cozy bed at home #sorrynotsorry

6. Just getting away from all the stresses of school. There are very few things in life that feel as good as physically getting away for a little while from things that stress you out. Sure, you have to bring your books home and study for midterms anyway. But it’s much more relaxing to study in your childhood home than to study at the library for what feels like the millionth time in a row. Life just seems simpler at home.

7. Did I mention the food?

8. A break from general responsibilities. When you’re in school and living on your own, you have to cook and clean and do laundry and wake up early and get yourself to class. Although these things are all important, and none of them are very hard, it’s nice to take a break for a few days, and have the chance to sleep in and let someone else take care of things like cooking and laundry.

Whether you’re headed home or you’re staying at school this weekend, have a great thanksgiving and appreciate all your life has to offer!
