Every once in awhile, it pays to stay in and watch a movie either with your girls on your own! While it can be nice to put on something mindless and fluffy, why not pick and flick that celebrates women while being entertaining? Here are my top picks that include female characters that stand on their own two feet.

An Education

Watch Carey Mulligan in her first big leading role as the shy-but-ambitious teen that strikes up a romance with an older gentleman. Set in 1960’s London, An Education perfectly captures what it is like to be a young girl with big dreams and teaches an important lesson about taking risks.

Frances Ha

If you’ve ever felt like your life is stuck in place and that everyone else is growing up around you, this is the movie for you. Shot in gorgeous black-and-white, you’ll feel like you’re watching a vintage film that’s talking to the modern 20-something.

Sucker Punch

Many people out there will argue that Sucker Punch is nothing more than a group of women wearing lingerie and fighting bad guys, but this movie is so much more. Starring Emily Browning and Jena Malone, this film is about strong women fighting for their freedom- and it will motivate to take up martial arts!

Ruby Sparks

A gorgeous film starring and written by the talented Zoe Kazan that brings up the age-old lesson not to idealize the person you’re dating in a new, charming way. You’ll love the beautiful California backdrop and Kazan’s adorable character.

Legally Blonde

If you haven’t seen this classic yet, it’s time. While it might give you unrealistic expectations about getting into grad school, the story of Elle Woods staying true to herself and reaching her goals is a must-see.

Begin Again

Although this film is more about new beginnings than independence, Keira Knightley plays Greta, a young woman to turns to making music after getting her heart broken. Also starring Mark Ruffalo, Adam Levine and Hailey Steinfeld.
