6 Amazing Podcasts Every College girl Should Listen To

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Waterloo chapter.

A few months ago, I was introduced to the world of podcasts. For those of you who don’t know, a podcast is an audio platform with a radio style, they have episodes published on a schedule and usually focus on a specific topic or theme. They’re free to download on several platforms, which means you can listen to them whenever: getting ready, at the gym, on the bus, or even before you go to sleep. There is a never-ending list of topics and genres – if you can think of a topic, a podcast about it probably exists!

So if you’re new to this concept, no worries! I’ve made a list of 6 amazing podcasts you should totally download and listen to!

1. Tim and Sid

This podcast is for the listener who loves anything and everything in the world of sports. The two hosts have extensive knowledge of all leagues (NBA, MLB, NHL and NFL, to name a few), and each weekday they have coaches, players and insiders on the show to talk about the hottest topics in sports. Also, the two hosts have amazing chemistry and charismatic personalities, so you won’t be bored! There are new episodes every weekday.

2. Harry Potter and the Sacred Text

This podcast takes Harry Potter, the best-selling series, and treats it as a sacred text. The hosts read a chapter each week to try to take away wisdom from the novels. Each week they examine a new chapter through the lens of a theme. They also use techniques for sacred reading in order to understand the most they can out of each chapter of this literary masterpiece. There’s also the 30-second recap, where the hosts try to out-do each other by summarizing the chapter in 30 seconds for the listeners.  A new episode comes out every Tuesday.

3. Myths and Legends

This podcast tells listeners the real – or as close to real – stories behind popular myths and legends you may have heard about growing up. I find it interesting to learn about the historical truth behind some well-loved Disney movies like Mulan, Pocahontas, and Hercules as well as learning more about Vikings, Greek mythology, Irish legends, and more. If you’re interested in myths, legends, and learning more about the history behind them, check this out. New episodes come out on Tuesdays.

4. Q: The Podcast from CBC Radio

Q is the show by CBC that interviews artists that you may already know and love, or up and comers that you’ll want to learn more about. They interview people in the music, movie, art, and comedy industries to name a few. On top of interviews, there are also recorded, live in-studio performances. This is a great podcast for someone who is looking to learn more about their favourite artists or discover an amazing new artist. There’s a new episode every weekday.

5. Welcome to Night Vale

This show is for people with a quirky sense of humour. The podcast is presented in the style of a community update for the small desert town of Night Vale. This town isn’t normal though. There are hooded figures, the glow cloud, and the strange lights in the night sky, just to name a few strange occurrences. There are also updates on traffic, weather, and cultural events in the community. This quirky podcast is a must-listen for me, even though it took a few episodes for me to get into it. There are new episodes twice a month, usually on the 1st and the 15th of the month.

6. Campus

This podcast from CBC is a must listen for anyone who is in University right now. It talks about this time as an undergraduate, and each episode focuses on someone who has gone through university, and is essentially a crash course on how to get through it. It’s uncensored and sometimes talks about heavy topics such as HIV, eating disorders and mental illness, but I love this show for that. It’s not a sugar-coated version of college you hear about during presentations. It’s real life, told by real people. New episodes come out every Friday.

Happy listening Warriors!
