So, I’m a little bit of an astrology nerd.

Often, when people think of astrology, many people think of daily horoscopes, and your sign, and if you’re a Cancer you probably cry all the time and that Geminis are the worst, right? Well actually, astrology is a lot more than that. I didn’t really get into astrology until pretty recently, but I soon discovered that daily horoscopes and cute instagram posts are not what it is, at all.

Astrology is actually a spiritual language that has been studied and used for hundreds of years, some people even claiming it helped give insight into future happenings based on planets and houses.  Whether or not you believe that’s true, all I can tell you is that if you’re the kind of person who maybe takes the time to read instagram posts, follow astrology accounts, and maybe even check your daily horoscope, many people are doing it all wrong.

Why, you might ask? Well the majority of people really only know about your sign, which is the sign that is determined by when you were born, the one that most people identify with. Did you actually know you are a conglomerate of different signs?

See, everybody has a chart, which is based at the exact time and location to when you were born.Basically, your birth chart is a snapshot on the sky when you were born, and it shows where all the planets were placed in your chart. So, every chart is individualized to the exact moment that you were born. There’s many different things about a person’s birth chart, however, I’m going to focus on the most prominent parts of a person’s chart, which are your sun, moon and rising/ascendant sign.

When people ask for your zodiac sign, they’re usually asking about your sign sun, which tells you about the position of the sun when you were born. This is the most mainstream sign, and the one you probably know about in your chart. Your sun sign is basically your essence, or your sense of self. It is your core. However, it is not as important as mainstream astrology makes it seem to be. Your sign is made to seem like the most important part of your birth chart, when in reality, while it is important, it needs all the signs, houses and planets in your chart to function. You’ve probably met someone with your sign and thought, they seem nothing like a stereotypical Pisces , or read something about the signs that is so generalized that anyone could relate to it. Your sign is important, but it is only an aspect of you, not the whole thing. Your sun sign is helpful in finding out your self-expression and how you recharge.

Then, we have the moon sign. In the astrological world, the moon represents our inner emotional world. Personally, my moon sign is the most I identify with, because it is a mirror of my emotions and feelings I feel inside. Your moon sign helps you feel happiness, sadness, joy, pleasure, anger and so on. It governs your feelings and emotions, the inner you. The person you tend to hide from the world. Unlike the sun sign, which is determined by what rough monthly period you were born, the moon sign changes pretty quickly, approximately about two days, which is why knowing your exact birth time is important.

Lastly, we have the rising or ascendant sign, depending on what you may want to call it. The ascendant is the fastest changing of the three, changing signs every roughly 2 hours, which is why it is imperative you know the exact time of your birth. The ascendant is talked of as the mask one wears when meeting new people, or how someone reacts to the environment around them. Your rising sign is your social personality. Your rising sign is also taught to affect your outward appearance and style. Our ascendant is how we go about every day to day life. This is actually the part in your chart that can explain why some people tend to completely contradict their ‘sun signs’. Have you ever met a Sagittarius, who is supposed to be impulsive and adventurous, instead prefer to think before acting? They could be a Virgo ascendant. Someone’s ascendant can greatly affect the way they present themselves!

Knowing your sun, moon, and rising signs can definitely help you not only get a foot in the door about the intricate world of astrology, but also help you learn a lot more about yourself than you would have thought.
