Why You Shouldn’t Stay In Your Room All Spring Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Washington chapter.

When us college girls think about spring break, images of young women and guys partying it out on a yacht of some sort while confetti is somehow raining down from the sky might come to mind. It’s not like there haven’t been numerous American films portraying the wild cliché that is spring break, with movies such as Spring Breakers in which Selena Gomez and her girl squad can be seen robbing a diner and heading to Florida for their vacation, or the 2010 remake of the movie Pirahna in which the beach, fish, and bikinis seem to be a common theme. Spring break, like any other American school holiday, is what you make of it. Thinking about staying in your room all spring break? While crime, blood-hungry fish, and exotic vacations don’t have to be on your agenda, here are some reasons why you should consider partaking in doing something special during spring break if you haven’t already.

1. Bond With Your Friends

If you’ve been cooped up in your room or at the library studying for those exams, chances are, you haven’t been spending as much quality time with your besties as you would like. If you’ve always wanted to take a trip with your besties, now is the best time as ever to do so! The trip doesn’t have to be super expensive, you can find a cool road trip, explore your own city (there are plenty of beautiful hikes out here in Washington!), or find cheap tickets to a place you’ve always wanted to visit together. Whatever you decide to do, embarking on new adventures with your besties is always fun, and you’ll get to learn so much more about each other while getting that quality time that may have been lacking when school obligations are in the equation. Having the same break schedules with your besties will not always be as easy in the future, so take advantage of the time that you have with your friends!

2. It’s The Perfect Time To Get Out of Your Comfort Zone

It can be easy to just opt for staying home and catching up on your favorite show/sleep instead of planning out a trip (which is very tempting), but besides going to school and learning in the classroom, college is also about getting out of your comfort zone outside of campus! That doesn’t mean doing things that you don’t want to do, but the opposite! Take action on that college bucket list that you may have made for yourself! Maybe you have always wanted to do a road trip with your friends, but have never done anything like that and plans always fall through. Or maybe you’ve wanted to fly to another city with your friends but you’ve never flown solo before! Deep down inside, you know that your gut is telling you to take more risks that will benefit you, so this is the time to get out of your comfort zone and make your goals a reality. Who knows what will happen if you don’t try?

3. Explore A New City That You May Want To Move To In The Future

Taking a week to explore a new city that you may want to move to in the future is never a bad idea. People often feel like they have to be stuck in the same city after graduating, but the truth is, you don’t! The world really is your oyster after you finish school. Even if you don’t think that you want to leave your current city after graduating, it’s hard to decipher if you haven’t put yourself out there to see what another place with new people and opportunities have to offer. You might not move somewhere new right after you grab that diploma, but to have visited other cities and having those places in the back of your mind could make moving in the future a lot easier knowing a little bit more about what that place really feels like to you. Worst case scenario, you’ve explored a new place!

4. You Have So Much Freedom

Lastly, you have so much freedom and free time right now. It may not seem like it with all of the homework and classroom obligations, but as college students, we have the luxury of having a couple weeks (even months!) off of school. That isn’t something that all of your friends and you will have, to really take advantage of the freedom that you have to explore, learn new things, travel, spend time with your friends, all of the things that you will fondly look back on in the future. Work hard, but don’t take yourself too seriously and live your life to the fullest. So go do something fun this spring break and you’ll thank yourself for it later.
