As soon as I moved to Seattle, I was eager to explore more of Seattle’s famous institutions — the coffee shop. Coffee shops, especially those with the quintessential Seattle quirk, are my favorite places to spend the day when the library is closed or my work load feels especially daunting. If you’re sick of the same restaurants on the Ave, or maybe just looking to explore more of Seattle’s coffee scene, check out my favorite coffee shops!

Irwin’s Neighborhood Bakery & Cafe

Irwin’s Neighborhood Bakery & Cafe is only a bus ride (or long walk, if you’re in the mood) away. This super-cute Wallingford cafe is a great place to get some work done or just hang out. They have plenty of lunch options and pastries. My friends and I all had great sandwiches and shared a delicious cookie. If you’re in the mood for a homey and chill vibe, take the trip to Irwin’s!

Oxbow Bakery

Although you can reach Oxbow Bakery from campus by bus, the walk was my favorite part of my trip to this Montlake gem. I had a great cold brew, but my veggie sandwich with chickpea, lettuce, and pesto on focaccia was unforgettable. We also tried their tahini white chocolate cookie which was delicious. Oxbow is the perfect place to bring an out of town visitor for lunch and coffee or a great way to spend a weekend morning with friends.

Zoka Coffee Roaster & Tea Co

Zoka Coffee Roaster & Tea Co. is right outside University Village off the Burke Gilman Trail. With plenty of space to sit and do work, this is a perfect alternative to an on campus coffee shop or study spot. They have a variety of food and drink items including breakfast wraps, croissants, and coffee cake. I personally love their specialty Lavender Chai Lattes.

Le Panier

Whether you’re playing tourist at Pike Place Market or bringing a friend from out of town, Le Panier is the perfect French bakery. Their pastries are consistently good, and the vibe inside is perfectly picturesque. Be prepared to wait; there may be a line on especially busy days, but the amazing treats are worth it.

Trying new off-campus coffee shops is the perfect low-stakes way I’ve been able to explore Seattle. I use the app Beli to track my favorite restaurants. If you want to follow along on my Chicago and Seattle eats, follow me @marychai!
