The Best Cheap Places to Travel for Spring Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Washington chapter.

As a sophomore in college, I have come to a very sad and fastly approaching reality: the days of free family vacations to fun places over spring break are disappearing quickly. Soon it’ll become more difficult to embark on exotic family vacations with my family as I enter the adult world, and that’s depressing. However, as a lover of travel, I am determined to find fun and college budget-friendly trips to take with my friends here at school. Here are a couple of fun trips you could take over the upcoming break!

Portland, Oregon

Okay, as an Oregonian myself, this wouldn’t really be a vacation for me. However, this is a perfect mini road trip to take if you’re trying to stay in the PNW. Approximately a three hour drive south of Seattle, you can begin your Portland adventure by stopping downtown to pick up a pink box of Voodoo Donuts. From there, swing by Powell’s Bookstore and spend hours scanning the floor to ceiling bookshelves for your next book to binge. And don’t forget to eat dinner at one of my favorite restaurants in Portland, Pok Pok, which serves the best Thai food in the whole of Oregon (and possibly Seattle too).

Vancouver BC, Canada

To date, Vancouver BC is one of my favorite cities I’ve ever visited. You can walk around Stanley Park and visit the Vancouver Aquarium while you’re at it. And, for those of you over 19, you can also hit up bars and breweries, which is a fun plus. However, you do have to be careful because it can get a bit pricey if you’re not careful! Sightseeing and Airbnb’s are a great way to save some money in Vancouver. If you have never visited Vancouver BC, I would highly recommend you to do so!

Lake Chelan, WA

Lake Chelan is a great place to travel any day of the year. With beautiful scenery and fun activities such as swimming, hiking, mountain biking, and zip lining, Lake Chelan hosts a variety of exciting things to do for you and your friends. And there is a variety of ways you can stay in Chelan whether it be in a hotel, a cabin, or camping!

Mt. Rainier National Park, WA

If you’re a fan of camping and the outdoors, camping in Mt. Rainier National Park is the spring break destination for you! Roughly $15 a night, this is the perfect place to camp with a few friends and sit around a fire roasting marshmallows. Plus, you’ll be able to enjoy beautiful mountain hikes during the day as well!

Thailand

Okay, I know, this trip is a big one. However, this destination is perfect for college students! The most expensive thing you’ll buy during this trip is your plane ticket! Airbnb’s and hostels are dirt cheap and you’ll find the best street food in the world for only a couple of bucks a day. Not only that, you can go to elephant sanctuaries, lay out on the beach, and visit beautiful temples.

Now start planning your perfect spring break trip!
