5 Ways to Spice Up Your Eye Makeup

Aulla Elhassan Student Contributor, University of Washington - Seattle

My favorite step in my makeup routine has always, and will always, be eye makeup. I love expressing myself through colors and bold strokes. These are my top 5 tips to spice up your eye-makeup!

  1. Try colorful mascara

This was my signature in high school! If you really want to make your eyes pop, I would recommend using bright-colored mascara. Pro-tip: Use colors that contrast with your irises to make them look more vibrant (for example, if you have green eyes, try red mascara!) I recommend the BONNIE CHOICE 9-Color-Pack on Amazon. It offers a range of colors for a decent price and doesn’t smudge or dry fast!  Also, more neutral mascara colors like beige or brown can create a lighter, more natural look compared to the standard black mascara.

  1. Change the shape of your eyeliner

Ahh, eyeliner. Classic. While you can never go wrong with a wing, there are definitely ways to enhance them. I wear glasses, and I’ve noticed when I draw my wing all the way through to my inner corner, my eyes look a lot smaller, and it altogether looks a bit “overkill.” While it really depends on your frame, the general rule of thumb is to draw a thinner, subtler wing beginning from the middle of your eye. 4-eyed girlies rise! However, on the days I pull out the contacts, I’ll sometimes draw my eyeliner on thicker. There’s a specific look I really love: the “doll-eye” liner. For this look, you begin from the corner beneath your bottom lashes, draw a slight arc, and then connect it to the rest of your wing. You can choose whether to fill that section in or not(I personally love filling it but it does have the tendency to smudge.) I only use liquid-eyeliner, (it’s so much easier to correct mistakes and wash off at the end of day) and my go-to will always be the maybelline eye studio master precise liquid eyeliner. It’s only $7, and it’s sold in most drugstores!

  1. Color your waterline

Similar to using colorful mascara, coloring in your waterline is a surefire way to make your eyes pop! I lean towards gel based pencils because they last longer. My favorite is the glide-on one from Urban Decay. It comes in a range of colors, but I prefer the muted shades. Not only do they make your eyes look bigger and brighter, but the softer shades offset dark circles beneath the eye and redness in the face.

  1. Eye shadow in the “wrong” places

Putting eye shadow only in your inner corners, or all around your eye, can create a daring, unique look. If you’re someone who likes flamboyant clothes and jewelry, try this! It’s right up your alley.

  1. Pearls and gemstones

Maddy Perez moment! There are so many ways you can use pearls or gemstones to complement your eye-makeup– lining the creases in your eyeshadow or eyeliner with them, sticking them on your outer corners, putting them directly beneath your eyes- they are a really cute, fun way to add some flash to your look!
