During this season, every article about food talks about warm hot chocolates, pumpkin spice lattes, piping hot pies, and hearty soups. But if you’re as obsessed with ice cream as I am, the encroaching cold won’t stop you from getting your fix when you need it. So here is a list of some of the best ice cream places in St. Louis, so good that they’re worth braving the cold for a scoop or swirl.

*This list is in no particular order (these places are all too good to rank).

1. Ted Drewes

This is a St. Louis classic. They specialize in frozen custard, which they turn into concretes, milkshakes, and malts. The possibilities here are endless: you can dream up your wildest ice cream and topping combinations to create the most unique ice cream experience. Their recommended combinations are also delicious, so feel free to trust the menu.

2. Andy’s

While this place is a nationwide chain and not unique to St. Louis, it doesn’t disappoint. Similar to Ted Drewes, feel free to go crazy and customize your own concrete or order off their menu (and look out for seasonal specials!).

3. Clementine’s Naughty and Nice Creamery

Moving away from soft-serve territory and into your more traditional scoop shop, we have Clementine’s. This endearing shop is home to some of the best ice cream in the city. They whip up some super unique flavors in small batches right here in STL. With a focus on quality ingredients, you really can’t go wrong with your order here, but definitely don’t miss out on their most popular, Salted Crack flavor (it’s called that for a reason). It’s also noteworthy to mention that they have an alcohol-infused selection (must be 21+ to order) as well as equally delicious vegan options.

4. Ices plain and fancy

Instead of the traditional slow churning methods most ice cream shops use, Ices Plain and Fancy uses “flash-churning” to make Nitro ice cream at -321 degrees. The result is an extremely smooth, creamy texture – think Gelato. They use local ingredients to stir up a wide array of flavors. They’ve got traditional flavors, as well as some experimental ones. They even boast a long list of cocktail ice cream options. They also have a non-dairy selection, so feel free to bring your lactose-free friends.

5. Jeni’s

Jeni’s is a bit more widely known, with locations all over the country. They serve a long list of flavors that range from rich, classic chocolates to “Fluffernutter Pie” and “Goat Cheese with Red Cherries.” Try some flavors before ordering and don’t be scared to step outside your comfort zone here with some wacky combinations. You can also pick up Jeni’s pints at most grocery stores in the area!

6. Ben & Jerry’s

This one seems obvious, but I had to include it. Ben and Jerry’s is conveniently located on the Loop and always gets the job done. It’s reliable and loved by all. Don’t sleep on it.
