Going out during the winter is always a struggle in terms of finding a great outfit while managing to stay warm.  Although most of your time will be spent inside, you never know when you’ll have trouble finding a cab or if you’ll have to wait in a long line at the door.  We all want to look our best, but low temperatures, wind, and dreaded blizzards can put a damper on our favorite ensembles. Here are a few pieces and tips to help you construct the perfect outfit for going out on a chilly night.

1.Sweatshirt/jacket combo: On those nights where it’s just too cold for your thin, faux leather jacket, layer it with a zip-up hoodie. You might be thinking okay, now I’ll have TWO jackets to lose. However, if you take the jackets off together, it isn’t hard to keep them as one piece. Not only does this sweatshirt and jacket combination look cute, but it also adds that much needed layer in the coldest weather. Here’s a leather jacket with a removable hoodie liner, but it’s priced at $450. This is the perfect DIY opportunity!

2.Fur lined boots/booties: Keep your feet warm and no one has to know! There are lots of short, heeled boots that are great for going out but have a fur lining. Now, this is potentially fatal if your feet sweat easily, but if not, these are the perfect way for you to keep warm without sacrificing your look. In addition, the fur makes these boots great for an edgy winter daytime look.

3.Fingerless gloves: I don’t know if I’m the only one, but my hands get freezing when I’m outside for more than a few minutes at a time. Straight up wearing a pair of gloves while going out is pretty aggressive, but a small pair of fingerless gloves are easy to throw in your purse when you get inside, and they aren’t embarrassing to wear in line. You may even get a few compliments.

4. Stay away from sleeveless tops: While it may be tempting to wear skimpy tops, the best way you can ensure that you will stay warm is to wear long sleeves, such as blouses. If you want to show more skin, try an open back or cutouts at the shoulders.

5.Longer high-waisted skirts paired with booties: Pair a fitted, high-waisted, knee-length skirt with booties to stay warm while still being able to rock a skirt.  You can even get use out of your crop tops with this look, which I find can be difficult during the winter.

In order to stay sane, especially at a school as challenging as Wash U, we all need to work hard and play hard. Bottom line: don’t let the cold keep you from going out and having a good time!
