If y’all are anything like me, this week has been too much to handle. Between talk of riots, waiting for mail-ins to be counted, false claims of voter fraud, the possibility of the SCOTUS weighing in on the election, the seemingly-unstoppable rise of COVID-19 in St. Louis, and the repercussions of Trump’s possible second term, saying that I’ve been losing sleep is an understatement.

While I’m passionate about staying informed and it is one of our most important civic duties, constantly refreshing the electoral college map and re-reading news articles that vaguely state the same, answerless statistics is detrimental for my mental health. These past few days, I’ve leaned back on a few forms of self-care to stay sane amongst my election anxiety and I hope I can help yours too.

A comfort book or watching a movie

Although I’m currently diving into a new book, last week I re-read a book set in an alternate political universe.

Quality time with your friends and loved ones

On Wednesday, my suitemates and I had a sleepover in our common room—it was a much needed, minimal-stress night.

A quick workout

One of my favorite ways to cope with anxiety is to get in a quick sweat! My favorite Youtube workouts are by MadFit and Sydney Cummings.

Limiting caffeine consumption

Although I am convinced my body contains equal parts of coffee and water, I’ve been trying to limit myself to 2 cups a day to alleviate and prevent some nerves.

Breathe

I forget to do this sometimes. Ask my friends: they will tell you that frequently a loud sigh will amass because I’m so caught up in the moment and forget to breathe. Deep breaths, 7 seconds to inhale, 8 to exhale. We will have answers soon enough.
