Affordable Ways to Decorate Your Dorm Room

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wash U chapter.

Living in a dorm is arguably one of the biggest changes you have to adapt to when you go to college. Sharing common spaces like kitchens and bathrooms, sleeping in the same room as someone you’ve only just met, missing the comfort of being at home: all of these things can make adjusting to residential life a little difficult. However, by personalizing your space and making it your own, you’ll be “feeling at home” in no time!

Here are a couple of easy, cheap ways to make your space unique!

1. Gallery Wall

This decor piece is amazing because it is 100% customizable. You can hang prints, photos, signs, shelves, greeny, literally, anything is fair game! It’s an awesome way to express your creativity while bringing your dorm room to the next level.

2. Hanging Wall Art

There are tons of cute prints and frames you can get from websites like Urban Outfitters and Society 6. While there’s no denying they have tons of amazing options, it is super cheap to just DIY your own prints to put on the wall! You can make a collage, print off free illustrations and photos from the internet, and thrift some unique frames to use!

3. Fairy Lights

Adding fairy lights to your room is a simple way to change the entire space’s ambiance. You can get creative with how you want to string them up (maybe add them to your gallery wall?) and then at the push of a button you can let the magic do its work!

4. Books, Figurines, & Knickknacks

Bringing these little things to your dorm room adds a little extra detail and decor to space while reminding you of home. Coffee mugs, favorite books, and souvenirs all add something to your desk and can serve as interesting talking pieces when you’re making new friends.

5. Greenery (real or fake!)

Garlands, succulents, and potted greenery are all aesthetically pleasing and help your dorm room feel a little less like a dark, dreary cave. Having a couple of plants in your room (even plastic ones) brings a little more life into the room!
