6 Types of People You See During a Fire Drill

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wash U chapter.

I just experienced my first fire drill on Tuesday; The alarms were very loud and they definitely did take me by surprise! Luckily since it was 10 AM, I was just getting ready for class. However, people are doing all kinds of  different things right before a fire drill occurs. Here are my observations on the people you’ll see:

  1. The very angry people

I was definitely this person. These people are usually seen outside yelling about how annoying fire drills are. Their moods were probably ruined by how loud the alarms are. (Seriously, they’re super loud!)

2. The ones who were awakened by the alarm

They’re usually outside in their pajamas since the alarm basically got them out of bed. They either fall into category 1 or are too tired to function during the drill.

3. The poor souls who were in the middle of a shower

These people usually look frantic outside wearing only a robe or a towel. You can usually spot them by how much they’re shivering outside. You can’t help but feel bad for them since they were probably caught so off guard during their shower!

4. The ones who are slightly amused

This person, for whatever reason, gets a kick out of fire drills. Whether it’s from the excitement of the alarm going off, or from watching their floormates panic from the sheer noise, they’re usually the ones with their phones out happily recording the drill on Snapchat.

5. The surprisingly nonchalant ones

They’re somehow completely un-phased by the fire alarm. There’s no look of annoyance or surprise in their eyes. How do they remain so calm?

6. And finally, the ones you don’t see

These people got lucky because they had class or another commitment during the fire drill, so they don’t have to worry about losing their hearing due to the alarm. Wish I were them!
