5 Times When It’s Okay to be a B*tch

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wash U chapter.

They say nice guys always finish last.  Well, the same goes for us girls! And I don’t know about you, but I for one like to win my races.

1. When you are in charge

If you are in a leadership role, that means that your peers or boss have the confidence in you to be a leader. So own it. It is your responsibility to get the job done, no matter what the outcome, good or bad. So appreciate that you have people there to help you, but don’t let them take advantage of your niceness. In the end, it’s your ass on the line.

2. When you’re getting walked all over

Whether you’re working on a group project or have a one-sided friendship, do not let them get away with it! Your friend just asked to borrow a dress for Linus? Tell her that you need the last three dresses you lent her back before she’s allowed to raid your closet again. That one group member has the whole team doing a dance routine for your case competition, because it will really “demonstrate enthusiasm for cat litter”? Nope. Know when to put your foot down. Chances are, the person in question will respect you more for it.

3. When you deserve better

Listen up ladies, this is a big one. A relationship, with a friend or significant other, should be the last place that your feelings are not being taken into consideration. We all hope that our relationships won’t get to that point, but if yours does, say exactly what you’re feeling (“I” statements anyone?). And if that doesn’t work, be a bitch and walk away. There are so many fish in this big sea we call Wash U!

4. When you are getting ripped off

So often us girls are afraid to seem rude or demanding, so we don’t always speak up for fear of seeming like, well, a bitch. But the next time a cab driver tries to tell you that there is a $10 surcharge when it’s raining or that the company is imposing a minimum $5 tip policy, fight back. And if that doesn’t work, get out and call another company. Sure, you may think he needs those extra dollars more than you do, but you are not his personal bailout.

5. When someone else is being a bitch

Don’t just lie down and take it! Refer to the above list, figure out which one of the situations apply, and be a bitch right back.
