In the past few years, I have been experiencing some restlessness. The pandemic, the transition to college, and being surrounded by people of many skills have made me eager to try new things and advance my own skills. Here are 5 things that are cool to learn and also practical.

Crochet/Knitting

I recently picked up crocheting again and have been addicted to crocheting adorable, tiny Triceratops. The possibilities are endless with crocheting and knitting. You can make all sorts of small, handmade gifts for people once you know the basics of either skill. It’s often impressive to people and so satisfying when you finish a project.

graphic design

This is something that I want to learn and try sometime in the future. I’m not sure how much of it you can learn and how much is looking and feeling the work. I like to think that I am reasonably good at creating visually pleasant designs for presentations, but I’ve never put this skill to the test. It is ultimately useful if you are involved in the business school. There are a lot of presentations and mockups for them.

Cooking

This is a skill that poses a great challenge for me. Sometimes, the kitchen is a daunting place, but knowing how to cook is one of my greatest lifelong goals. It’s very useful, and kudos to everyone who can cook. Maybe one day I will accomplish this skill.

Writing

Whether creative writing or formal writing, this is an instrumental skill to have. Many places like to see that you can communicate well through written pieces. I have always liked to write creatively, but lately, my life has been full of formal papers and presentations. Still, nothing hits quite the same as a well-written artistic sentence does. Writing is certainly thought-provoking.

sewing

Sewing is a basic skill that I think is super cool to know and that is quite helpful. Basic sewing abilities like sewing a button or mending a hole are generally good to have in life. It’s also not difficult to learn the basics. I practically make up my own stitches as I go! If you know more complicated skills, you can mend and make many things on your own. I think it’s an uncommon skill people can learn, but it is certainly an important one.

Sometimes, you don’t even need to learn skills step-by-step. You can learn the basics and creatively bounce off of them. I never necessarily know all the stitches for crocheting, but I just follow the basics, and it comes out fine. It’s always fun to find a skill to exercise occasionally, and it just might come in handy in the future.
